River system of the Ems

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The catchment area of the Ems is essentially flat and especially not a basin. At several points, parallel to an inflow of the Ems, there is no separating bump in the river, which drains in the direction of the Weser or the Rhine ( delta ). The highest peaks are in the northwestern Teutoburg Forest between the Ems in the west and its tributary Hase in the east. The Hase is the only tributary of the Ems over 100 km in length. A large part of the Ems tributaries does not have a source in the classical sense, but arises from drainage ditches. There are many bodies of water with long, narrow catchment areas that only merge in a fan-shaped manner to larger ones relatively shortly before the confluence with the Ems.

On both sides of by the Dollard greatly expanded estuary waters networks were expanded to complicated drainage systems. The layout of the catchment area was also heavily changed by human hands: in the west, the rivers Hunze and Drentsche Aa , which originally ran through the Reitdiep into the Lauwers , are drained , as is the Noord-Willemskanaal to the Unterems. In the east, the water from the Vehnemoor , located between the indirect tributaries of the Ems Lahe and Vehne , flows through the coastal canal into the Hunte and thus into the Weser .

On the Ems itself and on the tributaries of the Leda , the tides can still penetrate far inland. On the other hand, on the broad part of the estuary and the neighboring north coasts, the sluices were moved as far forward as possible.

Representation:
  • Upstream order
  • A body of water flows into that of the river courses listed above,
the name of which begins above the indication of the confluence side ("right" / "left") of the flowing water.
  • Arrows are directed downstream and are in front of geographically upper parts of a previously mentioned river course. Lengths of such parts are in brackets.
  • Lengths after slash refer to the course of the river according to the official classification (bold) in contrast to the traditional use of the
name, or to the scientifically longest flow path in contrast to the officially defined river.
  • Waters of less than 25 km by name are included if they are part of the name of a watercourse of this minimum length.
  • Distance to a mouth, junction or source:
    • I = from the hydrographic mouth of the Ems,
    • S = from sea lock, sewer, pumping station
    • II = from the mouth of a primary tributary into the Ems
    • III, IV, V, VI, VII = from the higher-ranking mouth of a tributary of a tributary
    • Q, O = from the source or another type of upper end of a receiving water; Q – II, O – S = distance of the source from the mouth in the Ems, the rear end of the sluice
    • G = from Groningen harbor, km zero but not (upper) end of the Eems Canal
