The Football League Second Division 1982/83 was the 80th season of the Football League Second Division as the second highest English football league . It began on August 28, 1982 and ended on May 17, 1983.

Second division champions were the Queens Park Rangers and the second and third placed Wolverhampton Wanderers and Leicester City also rose to the Football League First Division . For the three promoted teams, the three first division clubs Manchester City , Swansea City and Brighton & Hove Albion, ranked in the table below, took the places in the following second division season 1983/84 . Rotherham United , Burnley FC and Bolton Wanderers had to relegate from the Second Division to the Football League Third Division . Instead of the three clubs, the third division winners Portsmouth FC and Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town, ranked behind, took the vacant positions in the following season 1983/84 .
