Hasty Pudding (theater company)
The Hasty Pudding Theatricals ( Pudding for short) is a student theater company (founded in 1795 ) at Harvard University , known for its burlesque musicals and for its status as the oldest college theater organization in the United States . They perform musicals that have been written and composed by the course participants and that have almost achieved professional status.
The pudding had its first premiere on December 13, 1844 with Bombastes Furioso . Every year a new production was set up, with two exceptions, during the First and Second World Wars . Members of the Hasty Pudding Theatrical included Theodore Roosevelt , Franklin Delano Roosevelt , JP Morgan , Oliver Wendell Holmes , William Randolph Hearst , Jack Lemmon , Alan Jay Lerner , Andy Borowitz and William Weld . After only men were allowed as actors until 2018, i.e. the female roles were also played by men - with women taking part in the productions as authors, composers, in the orchestra and as administrative assistants - the theater group will also accept women from 2019. Each spring, the Theatricals holds a five-week performance period in Cambridge , Massachusetts , and then travels to New York City and Bermuda .
The name is derived from a traditional British dish, hasty pudding . It is a kind of porridge made from cereal flour with molasses , honey or other ingredients. It's called Hasty because it's cheap and quick to make. This dessert is traditionally served at dinner at all Hasty Pudding Theatricals banquets.
Members of the Hasty Pudding Theatrical often make it to the top of the theatrical landscape as writers , directors, and actors in theater , film, and television .
The society is known for its annual selection of famous actors as Woman of the Year (since 1951) and Man of the Year (since 1967).
