The 1996 IBSF World Snooker Championship was the 23rd edition of the World Amateur Snooker Championship . It took place from November 15 to 30, 1996 at the Quality Inn Motel in New Plymouth, the second time since 1986 in New Zealand .
World champion was the Englishman Stuart Bingham with an 11: 5 victory in the final against the Australian Stan Gorski . Defending champion Sakchai Sim-Ngam was eliminated in the round of 16 against Gorski. After a maximum break was played for the first time at the IBSF World Cup in 1994 , there have now been two maximum breaks for the first time. Anan Terananon and Steve Lemmens each played a 147 series in the preliminary round.
The 83 participants were divided into eight groups in which they competed against each other in round robin mode . The top two in each group qualified for the final round, which was played out in the knockout system .
