The IIHF Continental Cup 2004/05 was the eighth edition of the of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF discharged competition . The tournament, which was held from September 24, 2004 to January 9, 2005, was attended by 20 teams from 20 countries. The final round was held from January 7th to 9th, 2005 in Székesfehérvár , Hungary .

Three final round participants were set, the host Alba Volán Székesfehérvár as well as the HKm Zvolen from Slovakia and the HK Dynamo Moscow from Russia , as representatives of the highest placed countries according to the IIHF world rankings 2004, which had registered for the tournament. The other finalists were determined in three qualifying rounds.

qualification

First round

The first round games took place from September 24th to 26th, 2004. The Romanian Miercurea Ciuc served as the venue for Group A, and the Group B games were played in Zagreb . Of the seven registered teams, however, one did not take part in the competition, which was then replaced by an out-of-competition team.

Group A

In Group A, the Israeli representative Maccabi Amos Lod did not start in the competition. In order to compensate for the loss, those responsible hired the Romanian team from Steaua Bucharest for the tournament. The Bucharest games were not included in the tournament ranking.

Because only three teams had registered for the tournament and one played outside of the rating, advancement in the group was limited to a single game. The host SC Miercurea Ciuc won this clearly with 17: 2 against HK Slawia Sofia .

Group B

Group B, held in Zagreb , saw Lithuanian club SC Energija Elektrėnai reach the second round. It was only in the last group game against hosts KHL Medveščak Zagreb that they secured group victory. Since both teams had separated in a draw and had previously been victorious twice, the better goal difference decided in favor of the team from the Baltic States .

Group D

The group D tournament was won by the Italian club HC Milano Vipers . Although the Milanese had parted ways with the Nottingham Panthers Panthers in a 2-2 draw on matchday one , they were initially only in second place, as the hosts HC Amiens Somme had won their opening match 3-0. On the following two tournament days, the Italians emerged victorious from their games, as did the British. After the final day, the two clubs were tied at the top of the table. Due to the significantly better goal difference, Milan made it to the semifinals.

Third round

The third round of the Continental Cup took place from November 19-21, 2004 in Hamar , Norway . In addition to the host, the three winners of the second round took part in the tournament.

Group F.

In the semifinals, the three qualifiers from the previous round met the host Storhamar IL . After no winner could be found in both games on the first day of the tournament, HC Milano Vipers and Kaszink-Torpedo Ust-Kamenogorsk topped the table after the second day of the tournament . On the last and final day of the match, both teams won again, whereupon the goal difference had to decide whether to win the group, as both teams had separated with a draw and thus each had five points. Since Milan was better than Ust-Kamenogorsk with a ratio of 10: 2 goals, the Italians reached the Super Final . Already in the second round they only advanced because of the better goal difference compared to an opponent with the same points. With only one point each, Storhamar IL and HK Sokol Kiew finished in 3rd and 4th place.

Super final

The Super Final took place from January 7th to 9th, 2005 in Székesfehérvár , Hungary . Were set Alba Volán Székesfehérvár as host, the Slovak participants HKm Zvolen and the HC Dynamo Moscow of Russia. Moscow had already gained several experiences in the European Cup in previous years and between 1997 and 1999 failed three times in the final of the European Hockey League due to the eventual winner. For Zvolen it was the third appearance ever on an international level. In addition, the winner of the third round, the Italian champions HC Milano Vipers , qualified.

Game scene between HK Dynamo Moscow and HKm Zvolen

On the first match day, HKm Zvolen and Dynamo Moscow underpinned their favorite position in the Super Final with clear victories over the outsiders from Milan and Székesfehérvár. While Zvolen beat the Italians 6-1, the Muscovites clearly defeated the hosts 8-0. On the following day of the tournament, both teams emerged victorious from their games, although both teams had slight problems and Zvolen only narrowly retained the upper hand 2-1. So on the final day of the match there was a duel between the two so far without a win and the two undefeated clubs. In the only statistical match between Alba Volán Székesfehérvár and HC Milano Vipers, Székesfehérvár was able to secure third place with a close 2: 1. In the final duel, Moscow and Zvolen finally met. The Russians went into the game with the advantage that they had the better goal difference and a draw was enough for them to win the tournament. However, the Slovaks managed to save a 2-1 lead over time. So they won their first European Cup in the club's history, while Moscow was again defeated in a crucial international game.

A total of 19,244 spectators attended the six tournament games.
