La Chartre-sur-le-Loir is a French commune and capital of the eponymous canton in the Sarthe department in the region of Pays de la Loire . It is located between the cities of Le Mans (47 km away) and Tours (42 km) and about 220 km southwest of Paris . The municipality has 1425 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), who are called Chartrains .

The main industries are agriculture and tourism. La Chartre-sur-le-Loir is located on the Loir River , about 50 km north of the Loire . The Jasnières and Coteaux du Loir wine-growing regions lie on the banks of the river .

La Chartre-sur-le-Loir has been Syke's partner municipality in Lower Saxony since 1973 .
