Malicorne-sur-Sarthe (German: Malicorne at the Sarthe ) is a French municipality with 1905 inhabitants (1 January 2017) in the department of Sarthe in the region Pays de la Loire . The small town belongs to the canton of La Suze-sur-Sarthe . It is particularly known for its faiences .
geography
Malicorne is located southwest of Le Mans in the south of the department, on the left bank of the Sarthe River . The closest city is La Flèche, 19 kilometers away .
Surname
Around 1050 the place is mentioned as Malocornu and Malecornant, around 1080 under the name Malicorni. It comes from the old French mal y corne , an expression for a building that is either poorly maintained or inhospitable. The suffix "-sur-Sarthe" was adopted in 1933.
history
At the beginning of the 11th century, during the reign of Fulko III. , Duke of Anjou , built a castle. She protected his country and at the same time monitored the navigation on the river. The place belonged to the historical province of Anjou and to the district Sénéchaussée de La Flèche established there in 1595 .
In the 18th century, Étienne-François de Choiseul owned the castle, which was built on the ruins of the castle. From a fiscal point of view, Malicorne was part of the Pays d'élection La Flèche from the Ancien Régime to the French Revolution . During the revolution, the community was incorporated into the newly created Sarthe department. Towards the end of the 18th century, an extensive faience industry with several well-known companies emerged. In a slag mill was blast furnace slag for coloring glazes ground.
