Parcé-sur Sarthe is a French commune with 2,100 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Sarthe in the region Pays de la Loire . The municipality covers 38.99 km². Until the French Revolution, the place belonged to the province of Anjou , only then did it come to the newly formed Sarthe department.
history
The place already existed in Gallo-Roman times. The Latin name was Parceum and referred to a village that belonged to a certain Patrice , who came from a Roman family in Anjou . Here was a bridge on which the Roman road from Subdunum ( Le Mans ) to Combaristum (now Combré ) crossed the Sarthe .
A medieval fortification and almost the entire place were destroyed in 1370 during the Hundred Years War when the English had to retreat to the west after a lost battle. Only the tower of a chapel dedicated to Saint Peter (Chapelle Saint-Pierre) from the 11th century remained and still stands today.
