geography
The county is located almost in the extreme northeast of Minnesota, borders Canada to the north and Lake Superior , one of the five Great Lakes in North America, to the south . In the southeast, the county is separated from Wisconsin by a maritime border . The county covers an area of 7,746 square kilometers and is bordered by the following neighboring counties and districts:

history
Lake County was formed on February 20, 1855 from parts of Itasca County. It was named after Lake Superior (dt .: Lake Superior ) to which the County to the south adjacent.
One place in Lake County has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Split Rock Light Station . A total of 20 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of January 29, 2018).
