Lans is a municipality with 1090 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Innsbruck-Land district , Tyrol ( Austria ). The municipality is located in the judicial district of Innsbruck .

geography

The place is eight kilometers south of Innsbruck , in the south-eastern low mountain range , at the foot of the Patscherkofel (2246 m). The Lanser See was created in the Ice Age and is fed by underground springs. It is a local recreation area for the Innsbruck population. The Sperberegg golf course and the Lanserhof health center are located in the community . On the outskirts of the village, the low mountain railway runs past, which connects Lans with neighboring Igls and Innsbruck.

history

According to linguists, the place name probably comes from the Illyrian language. Lans was first mentioned in 1177 as “predium Lannes” (Gut Lans) in a papal certificate of ownership for the Biburg monastery . The village was located on the traffic connection from Hall in Tirol to Matrei am Brenner , which was already established by the Romans and was of great economic importance in the late Middle Ages as the “salt road”. Since 1379, customs became an important source of income for the community.

Obviously the margraves of Istria had possessions in the municipality, because in 1288 they donated a farm in Lans to the Benediktbeuern monastery . In 1313 Lans was first mentioned as a municipality in a tax register, and in 1406 a village master was first mentioned. 1328 came Lanser Lake in compensation for the cost of his wedding ceremony of King Henry II. In the 17th and 18th centuries Lans was famous for its peasant theater, with an accident in 1678. During a performance at which Charles of Lorraine and his wife were also present, the blanket propped up and injured a general and his wife.

In 1845 the construction of country houses and villas began in what had been a rural community until then. In 1900 tourism was stimulated by the construction of the low mountain railway. In 1902 the place was ravaged by a fire that destroyed large parts of the place.

After the Second World War, there was a wave of emigration among farmers, which went hand in hand with the increasing mechanization of agricultural work. Since the mid-1960s, more and more townspeople moved to Lans, which changed the appearance and character of the town significantly.

The municipal coat of arms, awarded in 1983, shows with miter and lance the attributes of the parish patron, St. Lambert , and with the water lily on a blue background refers to the Lanser See and the water lily pond .
