List of urban districts in the GDR
The list of urban districts of the GDR includes all urban districts that have ever existed on the territory of the GDR from the establishment of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) to the day of unification with the Federal Republic of Germany . Below the list, all urban districts that existed on October 3, 1990 and thus became part of the Federal Republic are listed separately.
East Berlin was a special case . It was never a constitutive part of the GDR. The initial municipal law and the later administrative structure of the GDR did not apply directly to East Berlin. It has always been a commune with a special status. From September 7, 1961, East Berlin as a whole had the status of a district . The individual city districts of East Berlin in turn each had the position of a city district.
According to the provisions of the “Law on the Self-Administration of Municipalities and Districts in the GDR (Municipal Constitution)” of May 17, 1990, municipalities that are not part of the district are for the first time no longer referred to as “urban districts”, but solely as “urban districts”.
