List of independent cities and urban districts in Germany
In the following list, all independent cities or urban districts that are in the area of today's Federal Republic of Germany are listed since the beginning of the empire's foundation in 1871 with the date of their creation and their dissolution. All cities and urban districts currently existing in Germany are highlighted in color in the list.
City districts in Germany
The names for the city districts in Germany were very different. They ranged from (self- or independent) town on circular immediate city , county-level city , residential city , Immediatstadt to the commonly used today still in Baden-Wuerttemberg city district .
The regulations for highlighting certain cities by outsourcing them from the surrounding offices, districts, district offices, districts, etc. are and were very different in the various countries of the German Reich and the Federal Republic of Germany. Therefore, the cities in Lippe, Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Mecklenburg-Strelitz, all of which were free of official duties, are not stated here until the respective point in time at which they become an urban district that is comparable to the other urban districts or urban districts is, were.
special cases
Special regulations apply to the cities of Aachen, Göttingen, Hanover and Saarbrücken. They were either incorporated into a special kind of local authority association or - in the case of Göttingen - into the district of the same name with the retention of special rights.
