List of top scorer in the UEFA Champions League
The list of top scorer in the UEFA Champions League includes all the top scorers in the competition, which has been played as the European Champions Cup since the 1955/56 season and as the UEFA Champions League since the 1992/93 season .
Miloš Milutinović was the first top scorer in the European Cup in 1956 with 8 goals . In the 1962/63 season , José Altafini was the record scorer with 14 goals . In the 1991/92 season, both Jean-Pierre Papin and Sergej Juran secured the last title of top scorer with 7 goals each.
The first top scorer in the UEFA Champions League was Romário in 1993 with seven goals. Cristiano Ronaldo is the current record scorer with seven titles. He also scored the most in one round with 17 goals ( 2013/14 season ). The current top scorer of the 2019/20 season is Robert Lewandowski with 15 goals.
So far, eight players have managed to defend their title from the previous season, regardless of whether they were the only titleholders or had to share it with other players. These were Eusébio (1965, 1966), Torbjörn Nilsson (1985, 1986), Raúl (2000, 2001) and Ruud van Nistelrooy (2002, 2003). Gerd Müller (1973–1975) and Jean-Pierre Papin (1990–1992) managed to defend their title twice in a row . Lionel Messi (2009–2012) did this three times in a row without having to share the title with another player. Cristiano Ronaldo defended the title five times (2013-2018).
