List of Saxon purveyors to the court

The certified purveyors to the court were allowed to use the coat of arms of Saxony in the smaller form

In the Kingdom of Saxony , a company , its owner or a certain product could be honored by the monarch of the country and members of the royal family with the title of royal purveyor due to the high quality of the products . Such court titles were then only allowed to be advertised on business signs, labels, advertisements, invoices, letterheads and the like. However, advertising on seals, seals and stamps was prohibited. Only the royal Saxon coat of arms was allowed to be shown in the smaller form, divided nine times as a heart shield in black and gold and covered with a green diamond wreath on the left, which is attached to the green band of the order of the diamond crown with the motto, "Providentiae Memor" two backward-looking golden lions as shield holders, the whole thing surrounded by an ermine lined and covered with the royal crown. The title “purveyor to the court” served as a permanent advertising symbol in Saxony and also guaranteed high quality goods. The Saxon king thus expressed his confidence in his purveyors to the court to deliver goods to himself or to the members of the royal family within the Saxon court . According to this, the royal court inn in the Dresden Residenzschloss, the court inn at Pillnitz Castle, the royal hunting lodge in Moritzburg and other Wettin court holdings had to be supplied as required.

A large number of industrialists, merchants and tradespeople in the Kingdom of Saxony were awarded this court title. The title of purveyor to the court was only awarded to people who distinguished themselves with outstanding achievements in their professional branch, had an honorable reputation and an attitude loyal to the king. They must also have had a business relationship with the court for several years. In the early centuries, the award of this title was linked to special obligations for the holder. Often awards were given to owners of family and traditional companies. It was not uncommon for women to be honored as “purveyors to the court” in Saxony.

Under the Saxon electors, for example, the court craftsmen (court tailors, court shoemakers, etc.) received an annual salary. They had to carry out the corresponding work for the court and house marshal's office. For example, the body and court kürschner once received an annual salary of 50 thalers, which was only discontinued with the new fund regulations of 1764.

The predicate was mostly given "... because of the good skill achieved in his art" and the owner of the predicate was assured "that he should neither be questioned by the ordinary jurisdiction nor by the compassion for common facilities" (court watchmaker, courier maker, nail blacksmith).

Two examples from the electoral era should be named here.

During the bombardment of Dresden, the merchant Ch. Lost all his goods and equipment by fire and suffered a loss of 26,000 thalers. As compensation, he receives the title of purveyor to the court.

The bookbinder A. in Dresden becomes "electoral library bookbinder" in 1770 because he has "essentially bound for the library and does good and cheap work".

Even then, the title of purveyor to the court was also awarded to people who lived outside the country. In Saxony he was therefore not tied to nationality. In 1765, for example, the top dealer G., who lived in Regensburg, was “accepted and accepted” as purveyor to the court. Applications for the title of purveyor to the court could be submitted to the Oberhofmarschallamt or to the Ministry of the Royal House. At the award itself, the court title was always pronounced by award decree and the decree was presented in writing. Usually fees were incurred for this, which had to be paid in advance. It was legally stipulated that only members of sovereign houses were allowed to appoint purveyors to the court, whereas non-government princes only had “suppliers”. Another important fact is that only physical persons in Saxony were granted the title purveyor to the court. This first formulated a convention on the basic provisions from 1906. The title was only valid for the dealer, the manufacturer or the owner of the company. If the owner of the court title died, the title was also lost. This convention of 1906 had become necessary because there were companies which, through a clever choice of words, created such a title for themselves and managed it wrongly. This can also be observed again in the present.

The award to legal persons and companies, however, was ruled out. Furthermore, there were titles that only named a product and did not concern the manufacturing company. Such titles then only referred to a precisely named product of a company, such as "table drink" or "farm table beer" and were also issued by decree. The purveyors to the court in the Kingdom of Saxony were classified according to their diploma. The diplomas were given the title "Court Supplier", unless another title (e.g. court goldsmith, court art dealer, court organ builder, etc.) was noted. Not only the sovereign could award the title, but also the family members of the Saxon royal family themselves. In principle, the Saxon smaller coat of arms was prescribed in the representations, which could also be added to the advertisements. Some members of the Saxon royal family often also had their own family coat of arms. This resulted in the simultaneous display of different coats of arms in the advertisements, which were mostly also explained. So there were different titles such as "Court Supplier to Her Majesty the Queen's Widow", "Court Supplier to Sr. Royal Highness of Prince Johann Georg, Duke of Saxony" or "Court Supplier to Sr. Royal Highness of Princess Johann Georg", next to the corresponding one Coat of arms.

If there was a change of the throne in the Kingdom of Saxony, after the new monarch took office, it was possible to extend existing court titles by applying for conversion or to continue by changing the name. So it was decided again. In addition, there were "Foreign Court Suppliers" who operated a branch in the Kingdom of Saxony. There were also purveyors to the court who had no residence in the Kingdom of Saxony but had a Royal Saxon diploma. In principle, the status of purveyor to the court could be withdrawn at any time.

After the end of the monarchy in Saxony, the title holders changed their names. It was mostly changed to "Former Court Supplier" by the companies themselves or was now completely omitted. The term “former purveyor to the court” has often survived to this day or it is revived. At present, the former purveyor to the court has often become an integral part of a company again and is mainly used to promote advertising.
