The FC Astana ( Kazakh Астана Футбол клубы Astana Futbol Kluby ; Russian Футбольный клуб Астана Futbolny club Astana ), also known as FC Astana is a Kazakh football club in only Sultan , the capital of the country.

history

Founding and advancement in sport (2009-2014)

The football club was founded in 2009 from the merger of two clubs from Almaty ( FK Megasport and FK Almaty ) under the name FK Lokomotive Astana . Under the leadership of Russian head coach Sergei Juran, the team won second place in their first season . In 2010 , the German Holger Fach and his assistant coach Sascha Franz were signed as the new head coach, who led the team to fourth place in the championship. Also in 2010 the first cup was won when Shakhtar Qaraghandy was defeated 1-0 in the final in the capital Astana Arena . However, UEFA denied the club a license to qualify for the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League . The Kazakh Supercup was won for the first time on March 2, 2011. The 2010 champion Tobyl Qostanai was defeated 2: 1 by two goals from Igor Bugaiov in the local Astana Arena in front of 4100 spectators.

On May 20, 2011, the addition of the locomotive was removed from the club name in order to underline the international ambitions of the club.

With the renewed win of the national cup in 2012. FK Astana qualified for the first time for a European competition, but was eliminated in the UEFA Europa League 2013/14 in the first qualifying round against Botev Plovdiv . After three consecutive qualifying rounds for the Europa League 2014/15, with FC Pjunik Yerevan , Hapoel Tel Aviv and AIK Solna defeated in succession, the club was in the play-off round for the first time and lost both games there against FC Villarreal .

First championship title (2014–)

Game against AIK Solna in the Europa League

In the 2014 season , the championship title was won for the first time with the newly signed head coach Stanimir Stoilow . Under the leadership of the Bulgarian, the team secured the championship title on the penultimate matchday.

FK Astana thus qualified for participation in the qualifying phase for the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League . The FKA started in the second qualifying round, defeating NK Maribor from Slovenia . In the third qualifying round against the Finnish champions HJK Helsinki , the club played 0-0 away but prevailed 4-3 in the home game. In the first leg of the following play-offs, the team was able to win 1-0 at home against APOEL Nicosia , in the second leg the team were down 0-1 up to the 84th minute before Nemanja Maksimović scored to equalize 1-1 . As a result, FK Astana qualified as the first team from Kazakhstan for the group stage of the Champions League.

With Benfica Lisbon , Atlético Madrid and Galatasaray Istanbul , FK Astana completed Group C of the competition. Astana lost 2-0 in the first group match against Benfica Lisbon. The team caused a stir on September 30, 2015 when they drew 2-2 against Turkish champions Galatasaray Istanbul. Astana was not only able to score the first two goals in Champions League history, but also the first point win in the current competition. This was followed by a 4-0 defeat by Atlético in Madrid and two more draws at the home stadium. With four draws, two defeats and a goal difference of 5:11, the team retired from the tournament as bottom of the table after six games. Nevertheless, this performance represents the greatest success so far at the international level of the club and also of a club from the Central Asian country.

Even before the start of the new 2015 season , the club signed the Serbian Nemanja Maksimović in February , who moved from NK Domžale to FK Astana for a transfer of around two million euros , making him the most expensive transfer in the club's short history. The team finished the preliminary round in third place, behind FK Aqtöbe and FK Qairat Almaty . In the following championship round Astana managed to defend the championship title from last year with only one point ahead of the table runners-up with a 1-0 win against Aqtöbe on the last day of the season.

With the 2015 championship title, FK Astana took part in the qualifying phase for the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League . In the second qualifying round, FK Žalgiris Vilnius was defeated from Lithuania. In the third qualifying round, the team closed the first leg in Kazakhstan against the favored Scots from Celtic Glasgow 1-1. In the second leg, FK Astana had to admit defeat 1: 2. As a result, the re-participation in the group stage of the Champions League was missed, but the first qualification for the group stage of the UEFA Europa League succeeded , as the Belarusian representative BATE Baryssau was defeated in the play-offs . On the fifth match day, the team won their first European cup group stage with a 2-1 win against APOEL Nicosia in the home stadium . On October 26, 2016, FK Astana secured their third consecutive championship one matchday before the end of the 2016 season .

The fourth championship title in a row followed in November 2017.
