Montgomery County was formed on February 12, 1821 from parts of Madison County and Bond County. It was named after Richard Montgomery , a general of Irish descent during the Revolutionary War.
When the first settlers arrived in the Montgomery County area around 1810, it was still home to the Kickapoo Indians, who migrated to the southeast. The newcomers built their first log cabins along Hurricane Creek . After the War of 1812, the government granted each soldier a bonus of 160 acres in Illinois for their participation in the war.
On March 21, 1821, the self-appointed county commission of three people determined that the new county administration should be about three miles away from present-day Hillsboro and named this place Hamilton. So a new settlement of log houses with this name was built at this point. Gradually shops, stores and a courthouse were added. The county seat was later moved to Newton Coffey, on the site of what is now Hillboro-Downtown. The first courthouse was built in 1824. The second followed in 1833 and the third in 1854. The fourth courthouse, which is still in use today, was completed in 1873 and cost $ 100,000 at the time.
