Parliamentary election in Turkey 1999
The election for the 21st Grand National Assembly of Turkey took place on April 18, 1999. The 550 members of the national parliament were elected . For the first time, local / municipal elections were held on the day of a parliamentary election .
The two biggest winners were the Democratic Left Party (DSP) and the Party of the Nationalist Movement (MHP), both of which achieved almost 20 percent each and subsequently formed a coalition. Presumably, their election results benefited from the arrest of the PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan .

consequences
On May 28, 1999, Bülent Ecevit from the social democratic DSP founded a coalition government with the far-right MHP and the fourth-strongest party called the “ Motherland Party ” (ANAP ) to prevent the radical religious virtue party (FP) from taking over power. Ecevit became Prime Minister again after more than two decades, and the MHP was again involved in a government after 21 years.
