Sainte-Mere-Eglise is a French commune with 3,077 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) near the coast in the department of Manche in the region of Normandy . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Cherbourg and the Canton of Carentan . The inhabitants are called Sainte-Mère-Églisais .

It was created as a Commune nouvelle of the same name with effect from January 1, 2016 through the amalgamation of the former municipalities of Sainte-Mère-Église , Beuzeville-au-Plain , Chef-du-Pont , Écoquenéauville and Foucarville , which had the status of a commune in the new municipality have déléguée . The administrative seat is in Sainte-Mère-Église.

With effect from January 1, 2019, the municipalities of Carquebut and Ravenoville were also integrated. These also have the status of Commune déléguée .

geography

The municipality is located around 30 kilometers southeast of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin , on the Cotentin peninsula , in the Plain countryside . The municipality is located in the Marais du Cotentin et du Bessin Regional Nature Park and extends with parts to the coast of the English Channel . The motorway-like Route nationale 13 crosses the area, in the far west it is also affected by the Merderet River .

Neighboring municipalities are: Saint-Marcouf in the north, Saint-Germain-de-Varreville in the northeast, Turqueville in the east, Sébeville and Blosville in the southeast, Liesville-sur-Douve and Beuzeville-la-Bastille in the south, Picauville in the west, and Fresville and Azeville to the northwest.
