Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock is a district town in the northeast of North Rhine-Westphalia and is located around 20 km southeast of Bielefeld in the Ems sand plain . The Holte-Stukenbrock Castle, which has a population of just over 27,000, belongs to the East Westphalian district of Gütersloh ( Detmold administrative district ).
The city in its current boundaries was only created in 1970 through the amalgamation of the two municipalities that had previously been part of the office, Schloß Holte ( Amt Verl ) and Stukenbrock ( Amt Schloß Neuhaus ). The settlement of today's urban area in the Westphalian Bay can be documented in writing as early as 1153.

Geographical location
The city is located on the Ems sand plain in the eastern Westphalian Bay , on the eastern foothills of the Münsterland, which is delimited by the Teutoburg Forest . Large parts of the urban area belong to the Senne natural area . The area is drained by the tributaries of the Ems , the Senne brooks, including the Menkebach , which flows into the Dalke east of Gütersloh , the Ölbach , which flows into the Wapelbach southwest of Gütersloh , and the Ems itself, which rises in the urban area. A small part of the eastern urban area (districts of Stukenbrock and above all Stukenbrock-Senne) belongs to the Senne military training area and is therefore only accessible to the public to a limited extent.
The nearest larger cities are in the northwest Bielefeld 20 km away, in the east Detmold 20 km away, in the west Gütersloh 26 km away and in the southeast Paderborn 27 km away.
geology
The Münsterland Basin, to which Holte-Stukenbrock Castle belongs geologically, has roughly the shape of a bowl. The deep underground of the urban area consists of a plinth made of folded rocks from the ancient world ( Devonian and Carboniferous ). In the direction of the surface there is a solid rock subsoil, which consists entirely of mighty, tectonically only slightly disturbed clay marl stones from the Middle Ages ( Upper Cretaceous ) and older layers of chalk-limestone. They are slightly inclined towards Munster. Finally, the upper layer of the area consists of a mostly sandy-silty-clayey layer of loose rock from the Ice Age ( Quaternary ). There are young, sometimes peaty sediments of the Ems and its tributaries and older ice-age deposits such as ground moraine or meltwater sands. The near-surface area sometimes has abundant groundwater. The groundwater of the deeper subsurface is salinized.
Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock is well to very well suited for the use of geothermal heat sources by means of a geothermal probe and heat recovery through heat pump heating (see the adjacent map).
Expansion and use of the urban area
The community, classified as a large rural community, covers an area of 67.42 km². The predominant part consists of agriculturally used area and forest area, together around 65%, followed by built-up area and traffic area, together around 19%. The proportion of other areas is exceptionally high at around 15%. This is mainly due to the military training area in the city area. The largest extension in north-south direction is around 8.5 km, in east-west direction around 14.9 km.

Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock borders in the north-west on the independent city of Bielefeld , in the north on the city of Oerlinghausen and in the north-east on the municipality of Augustdorf , and in the east for a short distance on the municipality of Schlangen (all in the Lippe district ), in the south on the municipality of Hövelhof ( Paderborn district ) and to the west to the city of Verl ( Gütersloh district ). Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock belongs to the temperate climate zone of Central Europe. It is in the range of the sub-Atlantic maritime climate. The winters are mostly mild under the influence of the Atlantic and the summers are moderately warm.
Due to the location in the sub-Atlantic maritime climate, a humid climate prevails all year round with relatively evenly distributed rainfall. Precipitation measurements do not exist for the city. At the station in the Senne to the west there is a long-term average of 997 mm of precipitation per year. This means that there is significantly more precipitation than the German average (700 mm). This amount of precipitation is influenced by uphill rain, as the Senne is located on the southern slope of the Teutoburg Forest. In Verl, bordering to the south, the long-term average rainfall is only around 770 to 830 mm. The temperatures also measured there give the long-term annual mean air temperature of 9 to 9.5 ° C.

history
Middle Ages to the 19th century
The first written mention of the Stukenbrocker Urhöfe “Brechtme” and “Gokersterteshusen” (Brechmann and Gauksterdt) dates back to 1153. Since 1531 the name “Stukenbroike” has been handed down for Stukenbrock.
At this time the house "Holte" was already standing, a fortified castle on the Ölbach, which was destroyed in 1556 by Bernhard VIII (Lippe) . Count Johann III. and Countess Sabina Katharina von Rietberg and Ostfriesland had the Holte hunting lodge built on these foundations in the years 1608–1616 . The Renaissance building, which has been modified several times over the centuries, has been preserved to this day. Opposite the castle and not far from today's district of Schloß Holte there is a testimony to the early industrialization: the Holter ironworks, which was founded around the middle of the 19th century and where lawn iron ore was smelted.

The main camp “ Stalag 326 (VI K) Senne ” was located in today's urban area from spring 1941 to April 2, 1945 . It belonged to the military district of Münster and was used by the Wehrmacht to accommodate prisoners of war, mainly from the former Soviet Union . Prisoners from France, Serbia, Poland and Italy were also housed in the western camp.
Around 180,000 prisoners have been registered in Stalag 326. Other prisoners passed through the camp on work assignments in the Ruhr area. It is not known how many prisoners fell victim to the poor conditions. Various figures estimate the number of deaths between 15,000 and 65,000 who died of exhaustion and tuberculosis .
On April 2, 1945, the camp was liberated by advancing US tanks. Later, from October 1, 1946 to December 31, 1947, the British internment camp Civil Internment Camp 7 under the name Eselheide internment camp was set up on the premises of the main camp . The victorious powers held 8,885 men there until they could be brought to justice.

Almost half of the population (46.5%, as of December 31, 2004) belong to one of the Catholic parishes that have been part of the pastoral network since August 1, 2007. The pastoral network consists of the parishes Sankt Ursula (Schloß Holte), Sankt Joseph (Liemke), Sankt Heinrich (Sende), Sankt Johannes Baptist (Stukenbrock) and Sankt Achatius (Stukenbrock-Senne) and belongs to the deanery of Rietberg-Wiedenbrück in the Archdiocese of Paderborn .
The Protestant Christians belong to the Evangelical Church Community of Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock. This belongs to the Gütersloh parish of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia . The beginnings of this community lie in the 1830s, when the settlement of various commercial enterprises attracted many Protestant workers and civil servants to Holte Castle. Up until the end of the Second World War, only 200 Protestant Christians lived there. As a result of the influx of refugees from the former German eastern regions, the number rose to 1,400 at the end of 1945 and to 2,500 in 1949, so that an independent parish was founded in 1950. The proportion of the Protestant population in the total population of Schloss Holte-Stukenbrock is 25.0% (as of December 31, 2004). An ecumenical town church convention has been held every five years since 2000.
Incorporations
Holte-Stukenbrock Castle has existed since January 1, 1970 and was formed as part of the North Rhine-Westphalian regional reform with the "Law on the reorganization of the Wiedenbrück district and parts of the Bielefeld district" of December 4, 1969. The two municipalities of Schloß Holte ( Amt Verl , Wiedenbrück district , before October 28, 1964 municipality "Liemke") and Stukenbrock ( Amt Schloß Neuhaus , Kreis Paderborn ) were merged to form the new municipality of Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock and initially in the district Bielefeld incorporated. Parts of the parish of Sende were incorporated into the new parish . Parts of the former municipality of Schloß Holte were reclassified into the newly formed municipality of Verl. With the "Law for the reorganization of the communities and districts of the reorganization area Bielefeld ( Bielefeld Law )" of October 24, 1972, the community of Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock was incorporated into the newly formed Gütersloh district on January 1, 1973. At the federal level, Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock is the only municipality in the Gütersloh district to belong to the Bundestag constituency of Paderborn , in which Carsten Linnemann (CDU) was elected as a direct candidate for the second time in 2013.

mayor
The current mayor is Hubert Erichlandwehr ( CDU ). In the 2014 election he received 74.32% of the vote. He was elected on September 26, 2004 with 73.5% of the valid votes and confirmed on August 30, 2009 with 70.42%. Also in the electoral period from 1999 to 2004 Erichlandwehr was mayor, on September 12, 1999 he was elected with 65.9% of the valid votes.

The city's coat of arms was approved on December 19, 1979, when Holte-Stukenbrock Castle was still a municipality.
The description is as follows: Under a split red shield head - inside on the right a golden (yellow) cross, on the left a golden (yellow) eagle - in silver (white) a green oak with two golden (yellow) acorns.
The cross reminds of Stukenbrock's earlier affiliation to the prince-bishopric of Paderborn , the eagle of the earlier affiliation of Holtes Castle (formerly Liemke) to the county of Rietberg . The two symbols are taken from the earlier municipal coats of arms of Schloß Holte (approved on June 24, 1938) and Stukenbrock (approved on August 31, 1953). The tree symbolizes the abundance of forests in the urban area or specifically the 1000-year-old oak in the Holter Forest .
Today the coat of arms is only used on seals, on festive occasions or special letters from the mayor; in everyday correspondence it has been replaced by a logo.
Town twinning
Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock does not maintain any national or international town twinning. From 1990 to 2008 Ostritz was a twin town on the Lusatian Neisse .
Youth parliament
The youth parliament of the city of Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock has existed since 2004. It consists of representatives from the comprehensive school, the grammar school and the Free List. It is elected for 2 years. Parliament has two seats on committees in the city and is entitled to speak there.

The city has no theater or cinema, there are no regular theater performances.
The cinema association "Rhythm" Filmtheater Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock eV offers with the Rhythm-Filmtheater a cinema in the auditorium of the comprehensive school.
Museums
In the Heimathaus Stukenbrock, consisting of two buildings, photos and equipment are shown that give an impression of rural life in the dairy area in earlier times. There is also a collection of ovens from the Holter ironworks, a clock room with the old Stukenbrocker tower clock from the parish of St. Johannes - Baptist and an extensive home library. The library comprises 443 old farm books, in which more than 560 old farms are described, which were established as farmsteads before 1800.
In addition, around 350 postcards as well as literature provide information about the eastern provinces of the German Empire , namely about East and West Prussia, Danzig, Pomerania, East Brandenburg, Silesia and the Sudetenland.
The documentation center of the Stalag 326 (prisoner-of-war team main camp) is housed in the former detention building on the grounds of today's police school and provides information about the history of the camp. In the nearby cemetery with the mass graves of the dead prisoners, an obelisk about ten meters high, which was erected on May 2, 1945, commemorates the victims of the main camp. Since 1967 commemorative events have been held annually around September 1st. While the organizers initially had to fight against fierce opposition from politics and the public, the events have received more benevolent attention from the population for several years. This increasing attention led to the visit of Federal President Joachim Gauck on May 6, 2015, who laid a wreath together with survivors.

Buildings
- Catholic parish church Sankt Johannes Baptist in Stukenbrock. The flat-roofed hall church from 1614 with an integrated west tower was expanded in 1683. The church was consecrated in 1686. The transept was added in 1820, the eastern part in 1936. The furnishings include a high altar donated by Prince-Bishop Ferdinand von Fürstenberg in 1683 , two rococo side altars created in 1774 by the Paderborn court sculptor Johann Jakob Pütt , the pulpit marked in 1666 , the baptismal font created around 1680 , the organ case from 1696 and the sculpture of Mater Dolorosa from 1636. - Below the church, at Hauptstrasse 5, is the former Peters Inn (now "Tor" Deele ), one of the few that have survived Half-timbered houses in the town center.
- The Catholic parish church of St. Achatius in Stukenbrock-Senne was consecrated in 1896. The neo-Gothic brick building soon proved to be too small and was expanded in 1930 in expressionist forms. The building was extensively renovated in 1966.
- Catholic parish church Sankt Ursula in Schloß Holte. The foundation stone was laid in 1912 and the consecration took place on October 13, 1913.
- Brink Chapel in Stukenbrock. The small half-timbered building with a turret was built around 1730, was later expanded on both sides and is dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua. It was restored from 1983 to 1985.
- Holte Castle : The moated Castle Holte was first mentioned in the 15th century and was created by the Counts of East Friesland between 1616 and 1664. In the 19th century, renovations were carried out.
- Welschof farm (Thorwesten). The former main building, the so-called Vogtei , was supposedly built in 1554. It is a four-post building with a half-hip roof .
- One of the most impressive court buildings in the area is the stately main building of the Bokelmeyer court , whose boarded gable protrudes over Knaggen . It was created in 1673.

Parks
There are no public parks in the area of the town of Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock. There is a Soviet cemetery of honor in the Stukenbrock-Senne district. It is a historical cemetery of around 2 hectares in which between 40,000 and 50,000 Soviet prisoners of war from World War II who died of hunger and disease are buried. The facility is open to the public.
The garden of Schloss Holte is a private, inaccessible park. This is a non-public, historic castle park of around one hectare in size.
Other sights
The Safariland Stukenbrock is an amusement park rides as well as offers a Freilandzoo. The park's enclosures can be driven through, the animals roam free in their respective enclosures. As a special attraction, the park offers white tigers and white lions.
Natural monuments and nature reserves
In the urban area in the springs Senne -Landscape in the nature reserve Moosheide the Ems . Other nature reserves related to water are the Kipshagener ponds , the gorges and moors on the upper Furlbach , the Ölbach and Wehrbach valleys .
The Ems adventure world near the Ems springs offers an interactive information tour with information about the river from the source to its mouth in the North Sea and its surroundings. Information is also provided on the Ems cycle path that starts in the immediate vicinity.

On the former site of the prisoner- of- war camp, main camp VI K (326) , the anti-war day is held annually in September by the "Flowers for Stukenbrock Working Group".
On the third weekend in October, the Pollhansmarkt, one of the largest annual markets in the region, takes place from Saturday to Monday . The market, which looks back on 350 years of history, attracts up to 250,000 visitors annually.
In the district of Schloß Holte, the Christmas market takes place every year on the third weekend of Advent .

Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock is known for the low municipal taxes and is therefore also referred to as a tax haven by the taxpayers' association. The city is located on the federal motorway 33 ( Bielefeld - Bad Wünnenberg / Brilon ). There are two junctions in the city : Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock (No. 22) and Stukenbrock-Senne (No. 23). In the past, a third connection point between the existing ones was discussed. Proponents of this solution expected a significant relief of the main connection between the districts of Schloß Holte and Stukenbrock, which ran through residential areas. There are three daily newspapers in Schloss Holte-Stukenbrock. The Neue Westfälische with a regional section and a local edition of the Westfalen-Blatt appear daily, Monday to Saturday . Public facilities
Swimmers can use the indoor garden pool at the school center. It has a 25 m pool, diving tower, teaching pool and toddler pool. Outside there is a lawn for sunbathing, a beach volleyball field and a playground. There is no outdoor pool.
Young people are given a choice of three Christian youth organizations. These are the St. Ursula youth café , the St. Johannes Baptist Catholic youth leisure center and the “Wadi Holte” Protestant youth center.
There is no hospital in Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock, so the facilities of the surrounding towns and communities must be used.
The Evangelical Church has two and the Catholic Church three community libraries in the city area. In addition, there is a home library in the home building.
The volunteer fire brigade Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock maintains two fire engines , one each in the districts Schloß Holte and Stukenbrock and a youth fire brigade .

The city offers some common types of schools. School education in the city is guaranteed by five primary schools (Catholic primary school Stukenbrock, Elbracht school, Grauthoff school in Schloß Holte, Michaelschule and Pollhansschule) as well as the Lisa-Tetzner-Schule (secondary school), the secondary school Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock, the grammar school Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock and from the 2014/2015 school year, the comprehensive school housed in an extension of the Lisa Tetzner School. The comprehensive school Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock is a bound all-day school with an all-day operation on three afternoons. The comprehensive school started with 134 students in 5 classes.
