The Crew is an open world - MMO - racing game from Ubisoft , which on December 2, 2014 Windows , PlayStation 4 , Xbox 360 and Xbox One has been released. In 2015 the game was revised again and has been marketed with the addition of Calling All Units since November 29, 2016 .

action

The story missions revolve around Detroit- based Alex Taylor. His brother Dayton Taylor, founder of the 5-10 car club , is shot dead in the presence of Alex and Alex is charged with the murder, which puts him in jail. Meanwhile, the car club is being expanded into a criminal syndicate. After 5 years Alex receives a visit from the FBI agent Zoe, who explains to him that "Shiv", at that time the boss of 5-10 , is the real murderer of his brother and is protected by the corrupt FBI agent Coburn. She now offers Alex his freedom, on condition that he infiltrate the car club 5-10 and climb higher and higher in the hierarchy, in order to ultimately bring both Shiv and Coburn behind bars.

Gameplay

The Crew offers an open, freely navigable, persistent world of the entire United States (except Alaska and Hawaii ), including larger cities such as Detroit , Chicago , New York City , Los Angeles , Miami and others, as well as some famous locations such as Mount Rushmore . A drive from the west to the east coast takes between 40 minutes and 1 hour in the game, depending on the performance of the car and the skills of the player. In addition to the main missions, The Crew offers numerous side missions in the form of tasks such as slalom drives, prey hunting or jump tests. The better the player scores in these tests, the better the tuning parts obtained for the car used (divided into bronze, silver, gold and, from player level 50, platinum parts). In each of the 5 major regions, there are also 20 hidden car parts to be found to unlock a hot rod , as well as 30 sights to discover. As in other Ubisoft games, part of the map is revealed when a landmark, in this case satellite stations, is discovered. In addition, the player can join one of five factions and complete special faction missions. The faction that has earned the most points at the end of a month receives five bonus missions for a short period of time. The player himself can also rise in rank within his faction, which is reflected in an increased daily Bucks salary. At the end of a month, the faction points are reset.

The Crew currently offers (as of April 22, 2016) including the Hot Rods, all DLCs and Wild Run, a total of 85 vehicles, each with specific tuning kits (road, terrain, performance, rally, racing, monster truck, dragster, drift ) can be adapted to specific requirements. In part, this means that vehicles are given a new type designation. For example, the racing version of the Pagani Zonda is no longer the F model, but R. If you have equipped every vehicle in the game with every possible kit variant, you have a fleet of 233 vehicles. Not every vehicle can get every tuning kit and with some certain kits are only activated later. Every car can be tuned both visually (paint, vinyls, spoilers and other external attachments and rims) as well as technically (performance) . Tuning parts to improve the vehicle can be obtained by completing all missions as well as successfully completing tests and by participating in PvP races. The tuning parts are divided into the categories bronze, silver, gold and platinum (platinum from player level 50), depending on how well the player has completed the mission in question, he receives a corresponding part. The tuning parts are also divided into levels. The player can only use higher parts when he has reached the corresponding level. The level of the vehicle changes depending on the parts used. Some main and side missions are only accessible from a certain vehicle level or a certain driver level. With the publication of Wild Run, a Smart Loot System was introduced, with which all players from this point onwards when completing missions, tests and public Pvp races at platinum level are no longer just performance parts, but also rims, various attachments, paintwork or also win stickers (vinyls).

The Crew is a massively multiplayer online game and requires a constant internet connection. In the game world there are many other players with whom you can play the main missions together ( co-op mode ). In addition, there are various player versus player areas in which you can race against each other. With up to 3 other drivers, you can form a crew and complete various missions. However, it is also possible to play the game completely alone.

The more experience the player gains, the higher he rises in his rank. The maximum rank is rank 50. A higher rank not only has the effect that your own vehicles are improved, you also receive one or more experience points for each rank increase, which can be distributed to certain people gained in the main missions and different depending on the person Bring effects.

Vehicle list

Wreckage can be collected in the open world. These are divided into 20 parts each in the various districts. You can find the parts for the road equipment in the Midwest, the off-road kit on the east coast, the performance parts in the south and the racing modifications on the west coast. Once you have found all parts, you have the option of building various hot rod vehicles (loosely based on a 30s Ford Coupe ) from them. The buggy parts can again be found in the Mountain States.

On January 13th, 2015 the first DLC appeared with 3 new cars and new optical tuning options. The second DLC Speed Car Package was released on February 12, 2015 . Also on that day there was a major update in the game for bug fixes and another player vs player mode (elimination race) was integrated. On March 10, 2015, the third DLC Vintage Car Pack was released. With the patch on March 18, 2015, a new player vs player mode (lightning brawl) and other faction missions appeared again.

In addition to the DLC packages already shown, there is also the Street Edition Pack. This includes 4 instead of the usual 3 vehicles. However, these are already included vehicles with limited tuning options, but with optically unique components that differentiate the respective vehicle from the starting base vehicle. On May 25, 2015, Ubisoft announced new cars that will be gradually added to the game. These vehicles are free of charge for owners of the Season Pass, all other players can buy these vehicles in the game with crew credits.

development

The Ivory Tower development team includes former members of Eden Games who have already developed a similar game with Test Drive Unlimited 2 . They received support from the studio Ubisoft Reflections, which among other things developed Driver: San Francisco . On August 13, 2014, Ubisoft confirmed that The Crew will be available for Xbox 360 , but not for PlayStation 3 or Wii U , in addition to the current consoles . This step was justified by the statement that the Xbox 360 is technologically closer to the current "next-gen" infrastructure than the other two consoles. The Crew uses Babel as the game engine , which was modified by Ivory Tower's in-house tools. On July 21, 2014, Ubisoft released a closed beta version for PC for a limited time. Another beta version for PC players could be played between August 25 and 29, 2014. An open beta version for Xbox and Playstation players could be played between November 25th and 28th, 2014.

Extensions

WildRun

On November 12, 2015, the WildRun expansion was released. This partly chargeable add-on contains new vehicle classes and new weather effects. The multiplayer mode has also been revised. The following functions are only available to buyers of the base game against payment:

  • new vehicle classes: motorcycle, monster truck, dragster, drift
  • New dealer in St. Louis (motorcycles only)
  • New test missions (long jump, drag racing, monster truck arena, drift training)
  • Speed trap challenge

Another innovation is the Summit. This is an event that recurs on a monthly basis, in which players can win a prize depending on their rank. In order to be able to take part in the monthly summit, players must take part in the so-called summit qualifiers that take place beforehand in order to obtain the participation certificate for the main summit. Three completed qualifiers give access to the grand finale. Alternatively, direct access to the monthly main summit can also be activated for play money.

A summit and all qualifiers consist of a number of different exams that must be passed. Only the crew race described as such in the event selection always requires a crew (consisting of at least two players), all others can also be tackled alone. The free roaming challenges, in which players have to pass various tests such as overtaking a certain number of vehicles, jumping a certain distance, or wheelies over a certain period of time, are represented in every summit. The three new vehicle classes are also represented by the respective test. Players can also create their own route or speed trap route and save it as a favorite and share it with other players by passing on a generated code (so that others can import this route and follow it themselves). Most of the time the player also has to complete time or checkpoint races, not infrequently with a given vehicle. At some events it happens that only certain vehicles, classes, brands or countries of origin are permitted. There is also a PvP event in the summit. In contrast to the usual PvPs, the vehicles are specified for the respective races and are all at the same level of performance.

Each completed test earns the player points for tuning parts, bucks and equipment parts for the vehicle used. Depending on how well the player performs compared to the other participants, his or her rank in the summit statistics increases or decreases. Here, too, there are subdivisions from bronze to platinum. The prices include bucks, crew credits, performance tuning parts, tuning kits or time-limited cash bonuses. At the monthly main summit, the player also has the chance to win a vehicle that has not yet been released. This chance of winning can also be increased by participating in any summit qualifier that has taken place beforehand.

Calling all units

As part of Gamescom 2016, the developers announced another expansion that is called Calling All Units and focuses on the conflict between racers and police. The player can choose between both sides. The player can either compete against the AI or against other drivers. For this purpose, specially modified police vehicles are made available to the player. These consist of the already known fleet, but this will be expanded with new vehicles (e.g. Jeep Wangler and Ferrari F12). In addition to the special vehicles, similar to Need For Speed Hot Pursuit , the player gains access to special abilities such as helicopter support, stun grenades or EMP during these missions. An additional campaign is part of the expansion package. In addition, the tuning parts were raised from originally 50 levels to 60 levels.

The crew was recorded mixed. The open game world and the tuning options were rated positively. The varied side missions also received positive reviews; however, the automatic start of this when you drive through the symbol was criticized. The story was recorded mixed, too often a similar setting had already been chosen. The Crew received negative criticism mainly because of its AI : The "rubber band effect", which ensures that no matter how well the driver drives, the AI is pulled behind like a rubber band, is particularly pronounced in this game, according to critics. The pursuit missions in particular are too difficult and can only be solved after several attempts and by trial and error . The multiplayer mode itself also received negative reviews: Usually only a few players are visible; in addition, The Crew does not encourage the player to open his own crew with other players, so the critics.

successor

The successor The Crew 2 was announced for spring 2018 . The publication was postponed by Ubisoft in December 2017 to April to September 2018, but on March 15, 2018 it was dated to June 29, 2018.
