In the Metal Hammer special edition Extreme Aggression it was described as one of the groundbreaking albums of the Metalcore scene.

The band also toured more intensively to promote the album. The group played in the USA , Europe and for the first time in South America and Japan . We Came as Romans played a total of 64 concerts.

Emergence

Production and publication

On December 8th it was announced that We Came as Romans would play on the Warped Tour . Even before the tour started, the band moved into the studio to work on the follow-up album of To Plant a Seed . Understanding What We've Grown to Be , like the debut album, was produced in The Foundation Recording Studio by Joey Sturgis .

The album appeared with Mis // Understanding the only single to the album. This was published on July 5, 2011 via iTunes . On this single, the song Understanding What We've Grown to Be was released as a bonus track. The group moved into the studio from February 16 to March 10, 2011 to begin work on the album. In contrast to To Plant a Seed , the group went to the studio a second time, from May 16 to June 23, 2011.

Understanding What We've Grown to Be was released on September 13, 2011 in North America and three days later in Europe .

Cover

As in the previous album, the cover was designed by Paul Romano. It shows the same boy without facial features as on To Plant a Seed , but this cover looks much darker than on the debut album. Joshua Moore and Andrew Glass from the band were also involved in the design of the cover. The cover was published on July 14, 2011 on the group's homepage as " Puzzle ". Metal Hammer describes that the boy, who can be seen on both albums, is "well on the way to becoming the band's mascot".

Songs

All of the songs on Understanding What We've Grown to Be were written by guitarist Joshua Moore. Much of the lyrics were written while the group was touring. According to the band and the trade press, the lyrics on this album are written “darker and more adult” than on To Plant a Seed .

Although the lyrics on Understanding What We've Grown to Be seem "grown up" and "darker", as in the previous album, positive news should also be conveyed. Compared to the previous album To Plant a Seed , the view of the songs is more realistic, as the songs now also illuminate negative sides.

The name Cast the First Stone has a religious origin. It is a partial quotation from one of the four Gospels , which says "Let He Who Is Without Sin Cast The First Stone" (in German : "He who is without sin should throw the first stone" ). The band does not see this quote from the Bible as a religious message, but as a " wisdom of life ". They are also of the opinion that because of the positive messages and the request to become a better person, their lyrics can also be associated with Buddhism .

“Even if this quote is from the Bible, it's not really religious. It is more of a wisdom that, in my opinion, one should live by. "

- Joshua Moore in an interview with Burn Your Ears
  • Mis // Understanding is about the loss of trust in one's own actions. However, the song has a positive ending: The message is conveyed that you just have to realize who you are and what you are able to do to make the bad past forget.
  • Everything as Planned is intended to convey to the listener that you have to take care of yourself first before you are able to help other people. The protagonist tries to help other people and neglects himself, but does not notice this.
  • What I Wished I Never Had is about a person who is out of control of his actions and describes himself as a puppet of his own feelings. He wants to get rid of his "demons" but realizes that this is not possible.
  • Cast the First Stone should convey that you should live your own life and not allow yourself to be manipulated by other people. Although the song title is a partial quotation from the Gospel of John , the musicians do not see this saying as Christian religious, but as a wisdom of how people have to live so that they can lead a good life.
  • The Way That We've Been
  • A War Inside describes a person who is at war with himself. Two mutual fronts are symbolized by the devil and an angel . The protagonist tries to become a better person and is hindered by his thoughts, symbolized by devils and angels.
  • Stay Inspired
  • Just keep breathing
  • Views That Never Cease, To Keep Me from Myself
  • What My Heart Hero
  • I Can't Make Decisions for You
  • Understanding What We've Grown to Be describes a person who has had a difficult life and over time learns to understand their life. Towards the end, the protagonist realizes that all the pain in the past has made him a better person.

Music genre

music

The music on Understanding What We've Grown to Be can be described as Metalcore- heavy post-hardcore . Because of the use of keyboards , which give the sound an electronic touch, the genre name Trancecore is also appropriate.

As in the debut album, the group also uses instruments that are rather unusual for this type of music. The use of violins , pianos and trumpets makes the sound quite melodious and orchestral, like in symphonic metal .

The singing often alternates between guttural singing , such as growls or screamings, and clear vocals . However, there is hardly any dominance of the clear vocals.

Texts

Compared to To Plant a Seed, the lyrics on Understanding What We've Grown to Be are clearly “darker” and “grown up” because they no longer convey only positive news, but also reveal negative sides, which is not the case on the debut album was. Nevertheless, the lyrics should mainly have a positive effect on the listener.

The group also takes the view that the positive messages and the request in their songs to become a better person can be associated with Buddhism and not just Christianity . However, no one has come to the band who has this opinion:

“You could even associate many of our lyrics with Buddhism - precisely because of our positive message and the challenge to become a better person. However, nobody has ever said to us: "Guys, this song sounds totally like a Buddhist concept." "

- Joshua Moore in an interview with Burn Your Ears

Reviews

English language reviews

Audiopinions gave 9 out of 10 points and was of the opinion that the vocals and the instrumental change within the songs or the entire program made Understand What We've Grown to Be better than the previous album. For the critic, the almost similar sound plays a subordinate role in many of the songs on the album. Max Grundström of The New Review describes the use of orchestral features as a musical recognition of the band. Sometimes he compares the group with I Am Abomination . Grundström describes that the sound has hardly changed compared to To Plant a Seed - that's why he calls the album “To Plant a Seed 2.0” . The New Review gave 3.5 out of 5 points. Pernell Fowler of Bring on Mixed Reviews thinks that the group took a step forward with the album, which is partly due to the lyrics, which sound more realistic than on To Plant a Seed . He compares the group to bands like Asking Alexandria , Woe, Is Me and Of Mice & Men . Overall, the album received a rating of 3.75 out of 5.

Understanding What We've Grown to Be achieved a score of 7.5 out of 10 for rock freaks . The critic says that while the group could not create a milestone inside or outside the scene, he nevertheless emphasized that the lyrics were for more important questions ask and seek deeper answers. AP also compares the album to competing releases from bands like Asking Alexandria, Woe, Is Me and Of Mice & Men. Dan Issit from Alter the Press! describes the album as more complex in terms of structure and emotions of its predecessors. He thinks that the album lacks a hit like “To Move on Is to Grow”, but Understanding What We've Grown to Be is a step forward. He also predicts that the group could gain more fans thanks to the album.

German-language reviews

Jürgen Tschamler from the editorial team of the online mail order company EMP says that We Came as Romans are not taking any stylistic risks with their second long player and are staying true to their style, which they have already shown on To Plant a Seed . He says that "the swinging back and forth between aggro parts and harmonic set pieces make the album more worth listening to than many competing albums."

“On their second album, We Came As Romans stay true to their style and don't take any risks when it comes to innovations. What was already heard on "To plant a seed" is continued here, only more mature, energetic and above all more self-confident. Perhaps one can grant the material a darker basic orientation, but in the reverse conclusion the text was a bit more positive. You could also say adult. Musically, the current Metalcore rite is used. Nasty, deep growls / shouts alternate with harmonious, sometimes very clean vocals. These are embedded in slow passages, before the pace is increased again with sharp-edged riff attacks. One of the album highlights could be named as an excellent example: "War inside"! WCAR also like to let off steam very close to massive melody passages, which enhances the overall sound. The swing back and forth between aggro parts and harmonic set pieces makes "Understanding what we've grown to be" currently more worth listening to than many competing albums. Although you stick to the genre specifications, you have delivered an expressive, varied album that underpins the good impression of the debut. "

- Jürgen Tschamler from EMP

Florian Krapp from the German-speaking Metal Hammer describes that the album has become much more varied compared to its predecessor and thus provides one or two surprises. The use of breakdowns and keyboard passages are also praised , which additionally underpin the skills of the band. It is also praised that the group allows enough space for the songs, so that the melodies come into their own. As examples, Krapp cites the pieces “Everything as Planned”, “What I Wished I Never Had” and “A War Inside”. The album received 6 out of 7 points. The magazine listed Understanding What We've Grown to Be in its supplementary booklet Extreme Aggression: Der neue Klach - Metalcore, Deathcore and more , which was included in Metal Hammer Magazine in December 2011, as one of the groundbreaking albums of the Metalcore genre.

Arne Kupetz from Legacy says that the group is not reinventing the genre, but the songs are concise and stirring. Kupetz says that the lyrics for Understanding What We've Grown to Be were very successful. He says the album turned out to be a great album. Katharina Pfeifle from Rock Hard is of the opinion that the production of the album is a well-rounded affair, where the aha moments are missing. According to Pfeifle, the hooks and melodies are in the foreground. She says that genre fans will enjoy the album and mentions "What I Wished I Never Had" and "Cast the First Stone" as tips.

André Jahn from FUZE Magazine is of the opinion that the band has a two-year period between the two albums. The sound and the cover seem darker and the lyrics seem more realistic and adult. However, according to the critic, the band had “fallen back on the tried and tested” musically: the alternation of clear vocals and shouts, as well as hard guitar riffs and “beautiful catchy melodies”. Jahn also says that the band managed to leave a lasting impression with To Plant a Seed and stand out from the broad metalcore scene. Stefan Berning from the online music portal Powermetal.de describes an increase in Understanding What We've Grown to Be compared to the debut album, but he does not describe the album as a musical milestone. Sometimes the clear vocals are reminiscent of Cove Reeber from Saosin . He describes Understanding What We've Grown to Be as a solid album, but there is still room for improvement to keep up with the "front runners".

Dom Kamper from Stormbringer.at is of the opinion that we will hear more about We Came as Romans in the future. He criticized, however, that the band then had to be able to do more than produce a song in twelve different variations. He said that the entire production turned out to be flawless, but the album would quickly get boring. Kamper gave the album 3.5 out of 5 points. On Whiskey-soda.de the album received a 2 (on a scale from 1 to 6). The critic describes that Understanding What We've Grown to Be takes up the "negative side of life", which the band hadn't realized in their previous albums. According to the critic, the lyrics are about how to deal with situations and how to deal with them when something goes differently than planned. She is of the opinion that the band sounds like Asking Alexandria , but without their strength, which could be due to the fact that many new metalcore bands rely on the use of synthesizers and keyboards. On Earshot.at it is said that the group doesn’t manage to revolutionize Metalcore , but the band brings fresh ideas into what, according to Earshot , is “sucked out” genre. In addition, the group delivers a high quality album.

Remarks

  1. The European version contains Roads That Don't End and Views That Never Cease as bonus titles. In Japan , the bonus track is a live version of Intentions . Accordingly, another bonus title should have been included in the other editions of the album.
