  • October 3 – An American Overseas Airlines four-engine Douglas C-54 'Flagship New England' Berlin-bound crashed into a mountainside outside Stephenville, Newfoundland and Labrador. The flight was carrying many wives and children of US Army personnel serving in post-war Germany. All 39 people on board died. At the time, it was the worst accident of its kind among US civilian airlines.
  • November 14 - A KLM Douglas C-47 crashes at Schiphol Airport, caused by a wrong landing. All 21 passengers, as well as the 5 crew are killed. One of the passengers was the Dutch writer Herman de Man.
  • December 25 – One after the other, 3 aeroplanes crashed while attempting to land during a snowstorm at Shanghai airport in China; a total of 72 people perished in what became known as China's "Black Christmas".

  • March 3 – A de Havilland Comet of Canadian Pacific Airlines crashes on take-off from Karachi, Pakistan, killing 11 on board, the world's first jetliner crash fatalities. The accident is attributed to crew inexperience.
  • May 2 – A de Havilland Comet crashes in a severe storm soon after take-off from Calcutta in the second of a series of crashes that leads to the grounding of Comet 1 fleet and signals the beginning of the end for Britain's pioneering jetliner.
  • Again, I didn't actually remove these Comets from the main page because they are historically prominent crashes with or without articles (in my opinion), but as far as I know they have no corresponding articles. plmoknijb 00:47, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • March 17 - Maritime Central Airways a Dart Harald Aircraft was on a regularly scheduled flight from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. It exploded in mid-air that morning shortly after takeoff. All passengers and crew on board were killed. The plane crashed in Upper Musquodoboit just outside of Halifax.
  • March 31Iberia Airlines Convair CV-440-62 crashes into the sea on approach to Tangier killing 50 of 53 occupants; the crash is blamed on a stall due to "undetermined reasons."
  • July 20 - A Cambrian Airways Vickers Viscount crashed on landing at Liverpool, killing both pilots and two persons on the ground.

  • May 5 – American Airlines Flight 946, A Boeing 727 flight flying from New Zealand to Texas, loses the engine power for no known reason. It crashes into the pacific ocean near New Zealand. The plane was found, but many of the passangers were never recovered.

  • October 1 – An Aeroflot Ilyushin Il-18 ditches into the Black Sea not long after taking off from the Russian resort city of Sochi in good weather. Between 105 and 109 passengers and crew are thought to have been on board; no bodies were ever recovered, and the cause of the crash remains unknown.[1]
  • October 13 – An Aeroflot Ilyushin Il-62 chartered from Paris crashes into a small lake about 6 km east of Moskva-Sheremetyevo Airport (SVO) after several attempts at landing in poor weather. The airport's instrument landing system (ILS) is inoperative at the time of the crash. Between 173 and 176 passengers and crew are killed; at the time, this is the largest death toll in civil aviation history.[2]

  • February 12 - Air Rhodesia Flight 827, a Vickers Viscount shot down by a SAM-7 missile shortly after take-off from Kariba Airport, Rhodesia, 59 killed.
  • March 13 - An Alia Boeing 727 (JY-ADU), forced into the ground during a thunderstorm near Doha Airport, Qatar. Of the 64 on board, 41 passengers and 3 crew died.
  • March 17 - An Aeroflot Tupolev Tu-104 crashed in freezing fog and rain near Moscow USSR. All 90 on board died.
  • April 23 - A SAETA Vickers Viscount (HC-AVP) missing on a flight from Quito to Cuenca. Aircraft found five years later. All 57 on board died (52 passengers and 5 crew).
  • July 31 - A Dan-Air HS 748 (G-BEKF) failed to become airborne at Sumburgh Airport, Scotland. Of the 47 on board, 15 passengers and two crew died.
  • August 4 - An Indian Airlines HS 748 (VT-DXJ) crashed into the Kiroli Hills 11km east of Bombay. All 45 on board died (40 passengers and five crew).
  • August 11 - Collision of two Aeroflot Tupolev aircraft. ATC separation error. 178 killed.
  • September 14 - An ATI Douglas DC-9 (I-ATJC) crashed into a mountain ridge near Cagliari, Italy. All 31 on board died (27 passengers and four crew).
  • October 31 - Western Airlines Flight 2605 Douglas DC-10 (N903WA) lands on the wrong runway and hits vehicles at Benito Juarez International Airport in Mexico City. 73 killed.
  • December 23 - A THY Fokker F-28 (TC-JAT) crashed into a hill near Ankara, Turkey on approach. All 45 on board died (38 passengers and 3 crew).

  • January 21 - An Iran National Airlines Boeing 727 (EP-IRD) crashed into a mountain near Tehran, Iran. All 128 on board died (120 passengers and eight crew).
  • March 14LOT Flight 007 a Ilyushin Il-62 from New York crashed on approach to Warszawa-Okecie Airport caused by the damage from an engine disintegration. All 87 people on aboard - including 77 passangers - were killed.
  • April 12 - A Trans-Brasil Boeing 727 (PT-TYS) crashed into a hill near Florianopolis, Brazil on approach. Of the 58 on board. 47 passengers and eight crew died.
  • April 25 - A Dan-Air Boeing 727 (G-BDAN) crashed into mountain near Tenerife, Spain. All 146 on board died (138 passengers and eight crew).
  • April 27 - A Thai Airways HS 748 (HS-THB) crashed during a thunderstorm near Bangkok, Thailand. All 53 on board died (40 passengers and four crew).
  • July 7 – Aeroflot Tupolev TU-154B crashed on takeoff from Alma-Ata, Kazakhstan. All 166 passengers and crew aboard were killed.
  • August 19 - A Saudi Arabian Airlines Lockheed Tristar (HZ-AHK) destroyed on ground after airborne fire. All 301 on board died (287 passengers and 141 crew).
  • August 26 - A Bouraq Indonesian Vickers Viscount (PK-IVS) crashed into a swamp. All 37 on board died (31 passengers and six crew).
  • September 12 - A Florida Commuter Airlines Douglas DC-3 (N75KW) crashed into the Atlantic Ocean. All 34 on board died (30 passengers and four crew).
  • December 21 - An Aerovias del Cesar Sud Caravelle (HK-1810) crashed after onboard explosion. All 70 on board died (63 passengers and seven crew).

  • April 26 - CAAC Trident 2E crashed into a mountain while on approach to Guilin, killing all 112 people on board.
  • September 13 - Spantax Flight 995, crashed after an aborted takeoff in Málaga, Spain; this DC-10-30 overshot the runway, crossed a four lane highway and killed three people in vehicles, and burst into flames in a field. Fifty people died.

  • July 11 – A Nationair DC-8-61 chartered by Nigeria Airways to transport Nigerian pilgrims to Mecca caught fire and crashed shortly after takeoff from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, killing all 261 on board. Underinflated tires burst and caught fire during the takeoff roll, and were subsequently retracted into the fuselage. Here the fire spread, leading to a progressive failure of the aircraft systems and its structure before the aircraft could return to the airport for an emergency landing.

  • May 19SAM Colombia SAM Colombia Flight 505, a Boeing 727, The plane, on route from Panama City, Panama, to Medellin, hit Mt. Paramo de Frontino at 12,300 ft. while on approach to Maria Cordova Airport. Errors by the crew and the ATC. The aircraft descended into mountainous terrain before actually reaching the Abejorral NDB beacon. The VOR/DME had been sabotaged by terrorists and not in service. All 132 passengers (including a group of Panamanian dentists on their way to a convention) were killed.
  • 4 November – China Airlines Flight 605, a Boeing 747-409, overran the Kai Tak Airport runway 13 while landing during a typhoon. The wind was gusting to gale force at the time. Despite the plane's unstable approach, the captain did not go around. It touched down more than two-thirds down the runway and was unable to stop before its end, crashing into Hong Kong's harbor. The aircraft was evacuated without injuries.

  • March 18 – While landing in Madrid, Spain, an Air Algeria Boeing 737's right landing gear collapses. The aircraft veered off the runway and injured about 45 of the 108 on board. There were no fatalities.
  • March 31 – A Team Air L-410 crashes near Rio Bonito in Brazil and catches fire. All of the 19 people on board were killed.

2007

  • May 4 - Two Cuban military deserters hijack a bus and reroute it to Havana Airport, before attempting to steal an empty passenger jet with the occupants of the bus as hostages. The plan is ultimately foiled but one hostage is killed before the men are captured.
