When an aircraft rolls over this area, its tires collapse in a controlled manner into the relatively soft material and the aircraft is brought to a standstill without major damage. The maximum distance to a standstill is 90 m. In this way, the overrun required according to the ICAO (with conventional solid runway surface) of 240 m can be significantly reduced.
