The county is located in the far northwest of Missouri and borders Iowa to the north . In the west, the Missouri forms the border with Nebraska . Atchison County covers an area of 1,415 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers are water. It borders on the following neighboring counties:

The area of what is now Atchison County was ceded to the United States by the Indians who had previously settled there in 1836 as part of the Platte Purchase and in 1837 it was added to the State of Missouri.
Atchison County was formed on February 23, 1843 from former parts of the then larger Holt County. The newly formed county was named after David Rice Atchison (1807-1886), a US Senator from Missouri.

According to the 2010 census , Atchison County had 5,685 people in 2,474 households. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer.
The racial the population was composed of 98.5 percent white, 0.3 percent African American, 0.2 percent Native American, 0.2 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 0.7 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.0 percent of the population.
