The Archdiocese of Poitiers ( Latin Archidioecesis Pictaviensis , French Archidiocèse de Poitiers ) is a bishopric of the Roman Catholic Church in France , located in the south-west of the country and raised to the status of an archdiocese and metropolitan seat in 2002 . The seat is in the city of Poitiers . Territorial it extends over the two departments Deux-Sèvres and Vienne .
history
Poitiers has been a bishopric since the 3rd century . Agon is considered the first bishop . Known bishops the church teacher Hilary of Poitiers , which as a poet and hagiographer acting Venantius Fortunatus and Gilbert de Poitiers . The St. Pierre Cathedral was built in the 12th and 13th centuries. It was built in the 18th century as a hall church based on the Poitevinian Romanesque style and is a rather rare example of this type of building in the Gothic . In 1317 the dioceses of Maillezais and Luçon were split off from the diocese. On December 16, 2002 Poitiers was elevated to a metropolitan bishopric.
The current bishop has been Pascal Wintzer since his appointment in 2012 .
