The county is located in western Illinois and has an area of 796 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. The eastern border runs along the Illinois River , the northeast along the Lamoine River . The following neighboring counties border Brown County:

history
Brown County was formed on February 1, 1839 from parts of Schuyler County. It was named after Jacob Brown (1775-1828), a general who fought in the war of 1812 and was awarded the Medal of Honor in Gold for his services.
On March 8, 1839, all stored documents were destroyed by a great fire. The first school was established in 1852.
