Coordinates: 37 ° 46 '  S , 144 ° 55'  O Moonee Valley City is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . Moonee Valley is part of the metropolis Melbourne , the capital of Victoria. The area is 44 km² and has about 110,000 inhabitants.

Moonee Valley lies between the Maribyrnong River and Moonee Ponds Creek and borders Melbourne City to the southeast . It comprises 16 neighborhoods: Aberfeldie , Airport West, Ascot Vale , Avondale Heights , Essendon , Essendon North , Essendon West , Moonee Ponds , Niddrie, Strathmore, Strathmore Heights, Travancore and parts of Flemington , Keilor East , Kensington and North Melbourne. The City Council is located in Moonee Ponds.

Essendon is home to the capital's old airport, which was Melbourne's main approach station from 1921 to 1970 before the more modern Tullamarine Airport opened just five kilometers away . Freight and smaller passenger planes continue to use Essendon Airport.

The Royal Melbourne Show takes place every year in Ascot Vale at the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds . This is the largest agricultural exhibition in Victoria and at the same time a huge folk festival. In addition to exhibitions and numerous competitions relating to domestic animals, farm animals and agriculture in 15 pavilions, there is a wide range of entertainment with numerous stalls, rides, shows and music, as well as fireworks every night. The event takes place in September and lasts one and a half weeks.

The Moonee Valley City Council has nine members. Three councilors are elected from the residents of each of the three wards. These three districts (Buckley, Myrnong and Rose Hill) are determined independently of the districts. The three candidates in the constituency who receive the most votes are considered elected.

The mayor of the council, who is elected for one year, is also recruited from among the councilors.
