The area of today's DeKalb County was formerly settled by the Indian tribe of the Kishwaukee . An area with huge trees, fertile soil and plenty of game. After the beginning of the settlement, mainly by settlers from Kentucky as well as wounded and deserters from the troops of General Winfield Scott in search of Black Hawk in 1832, DeKalb County was formed from Kane County on March 4, 1837 . It was named after Johann von Kalb , a German-American general during the American Revolution. As a result of the Black Hawk massacre, the stories got into the press and others listened to this kind of fertile soil, whereupon the settlement made rapid progress.
