Location of Wellinghofen in Dortmund

Wellinghofen is the statistical district 56 and at the same time a southern part of the city of Dortmund . On December 31, 2018, 7,177 inhabitants lived in the district belonging to the Hörde district.

geography

Wellinghofen is about 6 kilometers south of Dortmund city center and immediately east of the B 54 . The district is significantly higher than the Dortmund city center, so that from many points a wide view opens up over the entire city of Dortmund. Wellinghofen is divided into two larger settlement areas.

The northern part includes the old town center, the old church Wellinghofen and various shops. The town center is surrounded by mixed housing developments.

The southern part, on the through road, is predominantly characterized by the residential areas that emerged from the 1960s. Here bourgeois one and two-family houses determine the picture in the western area. The eastern area is characterized by the large Niederhofen housing estate, predominantly of terraced houses and higher apartment buildings.

history

The parish of Wellinghofen is one of the oldest settlements in Dortmund's urban area. It was from here that the Clarenberg monastery and, in its vicinity, the future town of Hörde were settled. Wellinghofen belonged to the county of Mark and served as the office of the Hörder district .

The Old Wellinghofen Church is located here as a monument . For the Dortmund pilgrims, the church served as a resting place on the way to Hohensyburg . The church was built as a cruciform church at the end of the 12th century and has been changed several times since then. Today, fragments of wall and vault paintings from the 12th and 13th centuries, a Romanesque baptismal font , a late Gothic tabernacle and the organ by Johann Georg Alberti (1709) testify to the great past of the church.

On May 1, 1922, Hacheney , Lücklemberg , Niederhofen and Wichlinghofen were incorporated into Wellinghofen. On August 1, 1929, the Hörde district was dissolved. Wellinghofen was incorporated into Dortmund.

Admiralplatz, named after the former Admiral colliery, is a reminder of the industrial history of the district .

Today the pump manufacturer Wilo deserves a special mention. The GoGas company (on Admiralplatz), which manufactures gas heaters, is also well known . For example, the stadiums of Ajax Amsterdam and Galatasaray Istanbul are equipped with GoGas radiant heaters.

sport and freetime

The most important sports club in the district is the TuS 05 Dortmund-Wellinghofen with the departments handball, table tennis, karate, gymnastics and basketball. In 1964 the club became German champions in field handball . The (indoor) handball team has played in its North Squadron since the two-track handball Bundesliga was founded in 1966. In 1974 she was first in the table and moved into the final of the championship, where she was defeated by VfL Gummersbach with 14:19. In the last season before the introduction of the single-track Bundesliga, 1976/1977, the team was relegated and has never regained its old strength since then. Up until the 2012/13 season, the club played together with TuS Lücklemberg as the "HC Dortmund-Süd game community" in the sixth-class Landesliga Westfalen. Since the 2013/14 season it has been operating under the name of TuS Wellinghofen again.

Borussia Dortmund's handball players play their home games in the Wellinghofen sports hall .
