The airfield Fürstenfeldbruck is a former air base of the Air Force of the Armed Forces , the US Army Air Forces and US Air Force and later the Air Force of the Armed Forces . After the end of military flight operations in 2003, it was used for small civil aircraft up to a maximum take-off weight of 2000 kg until it was legally dismissed in June 2010.

location

The site of the former airfield is conveniently located on federal road 471, mainly in the area of ​​the Maisach community and, to a small extent, that of the town of Fürstenfeldbruck . This means that you can reach the federal motorway 8 within 10 km and the A 96 in 16 km. The Maisach station of the Munich S-Bahn is in the immediate vicinity of the airfield area.

history

1935 began in the wake of the Nazi regime operated the Wehrmacht upgrade the construction work for the Air War College (LKS) 4 of the Air Force . The LKS was one of the military prestige objects in Bavaria. At a cost of 40 million Reichsmarks , the largest flying school in the German Reich was to be built on the air base. The representative buildings were based on plans by Ernst Sagebiel , while the teaching and accommodation buildings were designed by Robert Roskothen. The style of the Bavarian Post Building School , which was shaped by Robert Vorhoelzer , continued with the air force buildings of the LKS 4 , as many architects from the construction department of the Oberpostdirektion switched to the air force building offices from 1935 onwards. Architectural features on the air base are the 998 meter long so-called "kilometer building" and the tower on the training building.

In the flag room there are still murals by Albert Burkart with motifs from the Nibelungenlied . Connected to the LKS was the airfield with four hangars, a hangar and an armory. In 1937 the Luftwaffe took over the new air base. 1943, a concrete web was applied in 1945 for the use of 262-Me - jet airplanes was prepared. On April 9, 1945, the runway was destroyed in a bombing raid by the US Air Force .

In April 1945 soldiers of the 7th US Army occupied the air base. It was initially referred to as Airfield R.72 by the occupying forces . The USAAF (since 1947: USAF ) took over the site and used it as a military airfield . During the Berlin crisis with long-range bombers laid in the summer of 1948, briefly B-29 equipped 301st Bombardment Group to Fuerstenfeldbruck. The USAF's 36th Fighter Wing, equipped with Lockheed P-80s , had been stationed here since 1948. 1950 was converted to Republic F-84 and the unit to the 36th Fighter Bomber Wing , which remained until 1952. Then came the 7330th Flying Training Wing training squadron . In 1952/53, Fürstenfeldbruck served as an alternative location for RF-80 , whose home base near Toul was still being expanded. By 1957, the US Air Force expanded what is known as “Fursty” for short.

From 1956 the air force of the German Armed Forces was established, Fürstenfeldbruck became the “cradle of the air force” through the establishment of the “B” pilot school. On September 24, 1956, the first ten German pilots received their pilot badge there. On November 13, 1956, the first 20 F-84 F aircraft were handed over to the Air Force in “Fursty”. On December 14, 1957, the Luftwaffe took over the air base.

In July 1958, in connection with the 1958 Lebanon crisis , the US Air Force used the airfield to transfer troops ( US Army Task Force 210 ) to the Adana Air Force Base in Turkey and from there to Beirut .

In 1961 there were 19 independent offices on the air base site.

1962 was outside the military sphere designed by the architect Ernst Zinsser in collaboration with the sculptor Kurt Lehmann , the memorial of the Air Force for the dead of the Air Force built and aviation.

In 1964, the Luftwaffe 50 weapons school moved from Erding Air Base to Fürstenfeldbruck.

In 1967, aircraft that were about to land triggered the so-called Pasinger Dumpling War , which eventually led to other flight routes beyond the nearby Pasing .

On the occasion of the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich , construction work was carried out by the Federal Armed Forces administration to relieve the Riem airport for the charter traffic associated with the games . During the Summer Olympics, the rescue of Israeli athletes who had been taken hostage failed at the airfield . In 1974, construction began on a new building complex for the Luftwaffe officers' school , which moved from Neubiberg to Fürstenfeldbruck in 1977.

In 1978 the Luftwaffe 50 weapons school was renamed Fighter Bomber Wing 49 . In 1994 the association was decommissioned and at the same time reorganized as the Fürstenfeldbruck flight teaching group. On June 30, 1997, the flight operations with the plane's own aircraft type Alpha Jet ended with their dissolution . The Air Force finally ceased military flight operations in Fürstenfeldbruck on September 30, 2003 and dissolved the sub-units necessary for flight operations. In 2007, the northern part of the airfield with the runway was separated from the flight operations and barracks area and transferred to the finance department on April 1, 2008 from the area of ​​responsibility of the Federal Minister of Defense.

In the eastern part of the former flight operations area, the BMW company has set up a driver training facility, the “BMW Driving Academy”, which can be reached via a roundabout near Gernlinden .

In 2014, a part around the NCO's home was separated from the military security area and has since served as an initial reception facility for the government of Upper Bavaria as a branch for asylum seekers. In 2015, the entire complex around the classroom building of Air War School 4 was integrated into the initial reception facility. The entrance to the branch is on the southern edge of the federal premises. There is a bus connection there for the line to Geiselbullach.

The remaining part of the site will continue to be used by numerous Bundeswehr agencies until the site's task announced on October 28, 2011 by the Bundeswehr stationing concept is implemented. From February 2017 to December 2019, it was assumed that the air base would be closed by 2023. As the Defense Ministry announced in a press release on December 10, 2019, the site will not be closed until 2026. The reason given for this was delays in the structural dimensions at the Kropp and Untermeitingen locations.

Civil use

The private operator tried to get a permit for the civil successor use for aircraft of the general aviation up to 5.7 t total weight and submitted an application to the government of Upper Bavaria on June 13, 2006 . The area used for flight operations is reduced by 65%, and aircraft noise is reduced by up to 95% compared to military flight operations.

There were various concepts for the future of the airfield, some of which were superfluous:

  1. the concept of a commercial airfield for the Munich metropolitan area pursued by the FFB Betriebsgesellschaft on behalf of the state government, which was intended to replace the lockout of general aviation from Munich Airport since 1994. The outcome of legal proceedings (including termination of the joint use agreement) and the search for investors are to be regarded as settled by the decision of the Bavarian Administrative Court.
  2. The concept of the municipality of Maisach to set up a driver training center together with the BMW Group has now been implemented. After extensive construction work, the BMW and Mini Driving Academy Maisach was opened in the north-eastern part of the former air force operations area.
  3. The concept of the citizens' initiative Aufstieg mit Fürsty e. V. of 2008, which is compatible with nature conservation, maintains flight operations and makes driver training possible at the same time. In terms of the state parliament resolution of 2008, this is the concept that has been used to locate most jobs in the Fürstenfeldbruck district, which - from an economic point of view - brings up the rear in the region with a commuter share of 85%. The outcome of legal proceedings (including termination of the joint use agreement) and the search for investors are also unclear here. This concept also includes the operation of the circuits and test tracks seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. (Civil flight operations no longer take place.)

In 2008, the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks terminated the joint use contract of FFB GmbH on April 14, 2009, and a corresponding eviction suit was suspended.

In 2009, the state government canceled the conversion of the Fürstenfeldbruck military airfield into a civil airfield from the state development plan . The Defense District Administration South announced the deedication of the airfield on January 31, 2010. However, the operating company objected to the deedication. This contradiction had a suspensive effect.

In the following year, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry got out as a partner in Flugplatz Fürstenfeldbruck Betriebsgesellschaft mbH. The reason given was the lack of success in setting up a commercial airfield. The 10% share in the company was assigned to AOPA-Germany . In June, the military area administration south ordered the immediate execution of de-dedication as an airfield. This means that the operating company's suspensive objection was not granted either. On June 22nd, flight operations were stopped due to the immediate execution of the deedication. In July, the opposition of the operating company to the deed was not allowed. There is no legal remedy against this decision of the Bavarian Administrative Court. This ended the civil shared use and the planning authority passed to the municipality of Maisach.

Future use

Maisacher usage concept

The Maisacher usage concept provides for a partial relocation of the FFH area on the airfield site. Instead, the BMW driver training center (moved from Erding in September 2012), a trotting track, driver training for the police school and a bypass road from Gernlinden / Maisach are to be created. The north runway is used by RR American Classics as a test area for automobiles and for filming until the construction of the bypass road could end this. Aviation use of the vacated airfield area has not been possible since the end of 2015, as the special landing permit of the Bundeswehr aviation group was no longer extended by the Southern Bavaria Air Office. Thus, on December 20, 2015, the last two aircraft, a Dornier Do 27 and a Piaggio P 149 of the sport flying group, took off from the Fürstenfeldbruck air base and then landed at the new location, the Lechfeld air base.

With a guideline resolution, the city council of Fürstenfeldbruck set the development prospects and the long-term strategic framework for the air base conversion of the city of Fürstenfeldbruck on March 24, 2015 . The ten formulated guidelines should primarily determine the decisions and actions of local politics and administration.

Fundamentally, it should be ensured during the development of the air base that the area is connected and integrated into the urban, infrastructural and landscape structure of the urban area and that it can be implemented in stages. A meaningful comparison with existing concepts in the city area and with the neighboring municipalities should be made. The top priority is to ensure the quality of urban development and to focus on economic efficiency. The development process should be controlled by the city of Fürstenfeldbruck with its decision-making bodies. The development should also provide an impetus for the district or region.

According to the decision, planning is designed as an open process, because local knowledge is to be generated, space for new things to be created, the unknown to be left in place and innovation to be promoted. The largest area conversion in the history of Fürstenfeldbruck makes it necessary to discuss future goals with all stakeholders in the city and to create the prerequisites for joint implementation in an open dialogue.

Parts of the buildings located on the airfield site are under monument protection, the interests of which must also be taken into account during the conversion.
