^ Football League First Division 1989/90

The Football League Second Division 1989/90 was the 87th season of the Football League Second Division as the second highest English football league . It began on August 18, 1989 and ended on May 7, 1990.
Second division champion was Leeds United and also the second-placed Sheffield United rose to the Football League First Division . In the play-off games, Swindon Town first prevailed against Blackburn Rovers in the final against AFC Sunderland , before an appeal due to financial inconsistencies in Swindon was granted and the play-off finalist from Sunderland was allowed to rise instead. The three first division clubs Sheffield Wednesday , Charlton Athletic and Millwall FC, ranked in the table below, took the places for the three promoted teams in the following second division season 1990/91 . The AFC Bournemouth , Bradford City and Stoke City had to relegate from the Second Division to the Football League Third Division . Instead of the three clubs, the third division winners Bristol Rovers , runners-up Bristol City and play-off winners Notts County took the vacant positions in the following season 1990/91 .
