Gotham Award / Breakthrough Actor Award
The Gotham Award in the Breakthrough Actor Award category (comparable to Best Newcomer ) has been presented since 1998. The category formerly officially called The Perry Ellis Breakthrough Award recognizes actors who have distinguished themselves through a special achievement in an independent film .
Since 2004, the winner of the Breakthrough Actor Awards has been selected from five nominated actors and actresses.
