Pulmonary sanatorium
The term lung sanatorium , which was coined in the second half of the 19th century, refers to a sanatorium for tuberculosis sufferers , where the air cure was carried out, especially in the form of high altitude clinics . The transition to sanatorium and specialist clinic is fluid.
Location and importance
The German Central Association founded by Ernst von Leyden for the establishment of sanatoriums for lung patients caused a significant decrease in tuberculosis mortality. Carl Dorno and Alexander Spengler examined the therapeutic value of climate and ultraviolet radiation . High altitude clinics became fashionable. The Zauberberg (1924) created a distorted (“beautiful”) image of the lung sanatorium. The sarcastic term “moth bunker” is closer to reality - with moths the tubercle bacilli are meant. The infectivity according to the hospitals were isolated from towns and villages, possibly in altitude . Women, men and children were housed separately. Most of the houses had large sun terraces and gardens because the ultraviolet rays and fresh air promote healing. The secluded and healthy location favored the rededication for cure and rehabilitation since the 1970s . Many houses became specialist clinics for orthopedics or psychiatry .
Tuberculosis is still a huge problem in social medicine and infectious diseases . So the antibiotic resistance increases. The fact that the sanatoriums have largely disappeared is mainly due to prosperity and hygiene . In the post-war period after the Second World War in Germany and in the post-war period in Austria , numerous cases of tuberculosis occurred again. Many pulmonary health centers experienced a second “heyday”.
