La Sentinelle is a French municipality with 3136 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Nord in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the municipal association Porte du Hainaut , the arrondissement Valenciennes and is part of the canton Aulnoy-lez-Valenciennes .
geography
La Sentinelle is located in northern France as a banlieue immediately west of Valenciennes . La Sentinelle is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Petite-Forêt in the north, Valenciennes in the east, Trith-Saint-Léger in the south, Prouvy in the southwest, Hérin in the west and Aubry-du-Hainaut in the northwest.
In the south-east of the municipality there is the motorway triangle between the A2 autoroute and the A23 autoroute .
history
In 1875 the community was separated from Trith-Saint-Léger and became independent. Mining has been carried out here since 1764. In 1818 the Sentinelle mine opened , which then gave the municipality its name.
