List of recipients of the Golden Military Merit Cross

Gold Military Merit Cross

This list shows the bearers of the Golden Military Merit Cross . This is the highest Prussian honor for bravery for NCOs and men. From its foundation on February 27, 1864 until the end of the monarchy in the Kingdom of Prussia in November 1918, it was awarded to a total of 1807 people. The awards were made for acts during the German-German War in 1866 , the Russo-Turkish War 1877-78 , the colonial wars and the second half of the First World War (1914-18). During the Franco-German War 1870–71 and at the beginning of the First World War, the award of the Golden Military Merit Cross was suspended. Instead, the donated Iron Crosses from 1870 and 1914 served as awards for bravery in these conflicts . Due to the need for ever higher awards as a result of the long duration of the First World War, the golden Military Merit Cross was reactivated in October 1916.

This list is to be regarded as complete. Sources for this are the publications of Ophaus, Nickel, Fischer, Patzwall and Geile. Due to the destruction of the Prussian Army Archives in Potsdam during the Second World War, many primary sources are no longer available today. Like every other Prussian award, the Golden Military Merit Cross could only be awarded once to one person. Due to mistakenly listed double awards and individual award numbers added later at Ophaus, there are sometimes different information about the total number of awards in the First World War. In fact, the Golden Military Merit Cross was awarded to 1,770 people in this conflict.

The Golden Military Merit Cross ranked above the 1st Class Military Decoration or the 1st Class Iron Cross and was on a par with the Pour le Mérite for officers. It was awarded to members of the Prussian army as well as the navy and the air force . Comparable awards from other armies were the Baden Karl Friedrich Military Merit Medal , the Bavarian Military Merit Medal , the Saxon Golden Military St. Heinrich Medal , the Württemberg Golden Military Merit Medal or the Austrian Golden Medal of Bravery . The Golden Military Merit Cross was awarded very sparingly and was one of the rarest awards in the Prussian army. At the same time, the cross of the owners of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern with swords existed as an award for bravery for NCOs and men. During the First World War, however, this was only awarded to 18 people, including two holders of the Golden Military Merit Cross.
