Mittelwihr (German Mittelweier ) is a French commune in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ) with 832 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Colmar-Ribeauvillé and the canton of Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines and is a member of the Pays de Ribeauvillé municipality .
geography
The place is located at an altitude of 220 m in the western Upper Rhine Plain , about eight kilometers north of Colmar at the foot of the Vosges . The municipality is part of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park .
history
The first historical mention of this village comes from the year 974. Mittelwihr was part of the possession of Horbourg-Riquewihr from 1324 onwards. From 1534 until the French Revolution of 1789, Mittelwihr was owned by the Counts of Württemberg-Montbéliard .
From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Mittelwihr belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the district of Rappoltsweiler in the district of Upper Alsace .
During the Second World War , Mittelwihr was badly damaged by bombing in December 1944 during the fighting in the " Kesselschlacht von Kolmar " (Poche de Colmar) - the last battle of the Second World War on French territory.

Economy and Infrastructure
The original industry was viticulture, and the abbeys of Murbach , Saint Hippolyte-Lièpvre and Ebersmunster had their vineyards here. Viticulture still plays a decisive economic role today . The wine village is on the Alsace Wine Route . The Mandelberg single vineyard is one of the Alsace Grand Cru vineyards.
