Nugsar Assatiani ( Georgian ნუგზარ ასათიანი ; born July 16, 1937 in Imereti , Georgian SSR ; † April 2, 1992 in Tbilisi ) was a Georgian saber fencer who competed for the Soviet Union.
successes
Nugsar Assatiani achieved all of his international successes in team competition. At world championships he won the bronze medal with the Soviet team in Buenos Aires in 1962 , as well as silver in 1961 in Turin , 1963 in Danzig and 1966 in Moscow . In 1965 in Paris , he secured the title with the team. Assatiani took part in the Olympic Games twice: in 1960 in Rome he was eliminated in the individual competition in the preliminary round, with the team he finished fifth. At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 he moved into the team competition after victories over the United States in the quarter-finals and Poland in the semi-finals in the battle for gold, which was won 9: 6 against Italy . Assatiani was therefore together with Umjar Mawlichanow , Boris Melnikow , Jakow Rylski and Mark Rakita Olympic champion .
