history

Oliver Hazard Perry

Perry County was formed on January 29, 1827 from the eastern part of Randolph County and the northern part of Jackson County. It was named after Oliver Hazard Perry , one of the first Commodores in the US Navy. White colonization of the county was slow for the first 25 years. That didn't change until the mid-1850s when the Illinois Central Railroad was built. It linked the cities of Chicago and New Orleans and in the following years brought hundreds of immigrants, mainly from Ireland , Poland , Italy and Germany , to the area. At around the same time, significant coal deposits were discovered, which were the main source of income for the next 100 years. The town of Pinckneyville was named after Charles Coatesworth Pinckney , a hero during the Revolutionary War.
