Saint-Michel is a French commune with 3,417 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Aisne department . Since there are several municipalities with the name Saint-Michel , the unofficial name Saint-Michel-en-Thiérache is also used. The municipality belongs to the canton of Hirson in the arrondissement of Vervins and is a member of the Trois Rivières municipal association .
geography
The community is located on the banks of the River Gland , at the confluence of its left tributary, the Petit Gland , about three kilometers east of Hirson . In the north, the municipality borders on Belgium .
The Saint-Michel-Sougland station was on the Charleville-Mézières – Hirson line .
history
Early graves were discovered. There are also traces of a Roman road and traces of an ironworks from Gallo-Roman times.
The history of the abbey, which shaped the village, goes back to a chapel of St. Ursumer, which was built in 667 and destroyed by the Normans in 888. In their place a monastery was founded by Heresinde, wife of the Count of Vermandois . At her behest, two Irish monks came to take up the monastery according to the Benedictine rules. In 1180 the abbey was destroyed by supporters of Jacques d'Avesnes. The abbey was rebuilt in 1192 at the latest. Meanwhile, a village called Rochefort forma had formed around the abbey that belonged to the abbey. The inhabitants called their village Rochefort-Ster-Michel. Due to the proximity of the border, the village and abbey were often devastated, for example by the English in 1339, by the Count of Hainaut in 1340 and the German emperors in 1521, 1536, 1542, 1544. In 1557 the village and the abbey became devastated by the Spaniards. The monastery was rebuilt in 1598, but fell victim to a fire in 1715 and was rebuilt between 1721 and 1766. The monastery was closed during the French Revolution . The monastery buildings were finally bought in 1865 by Caesar Savart, who set up a girls' orphanage in them. This later went into a foundation for the difficult to educate. In 1971 the monastery complex burned down again, but work is being done on reconstruction. The church could be reopened.
