The Stade Chaban-Delmas , with full name Stade Jacques Chaban-Delmas , is a rugby stadium in the French city of Bordeaux in the Gironde department , Aquitaine region . The Union Bordeaux Bègles rugby team has been the sole user of the stadium since 2015 . Previously, the Girondins Bordeaux football club played its games here until May 9, 2015, before moving to the new Matmut Atlantique stadium.
history
In 1923, the mayor of Bordeaux, Fernand Philippart, decided to build a stadium with a cycling track . It was named Stade du Parc Lescure . Due to financial problems, the plant had to be sold in 1932. A year later, the then mayor Adrien Marquet decided to build a new stadium. The architects Raoul Jourde and Jacques D'Welles were commissioned with the planning. Jacques D'Welles designed the stadium in an Art Deco style. It is one of several Art Deco buildings by him in Bordeaux, such as the employment office. The arena was completely roofed over and was the first stadium in the world without roof pillars that obstruct the view between the stands. At that time it offered 25,000 places.
On June 12, 1938, the converted Stade du Parc Lescure was opened with the game between Brazil and Czechoslovakia in the World Cup . In 1986, under architect Guy Dupuis, the cycling track was removed and the capacity increased to 40,000 spectators. For the soccer world championship in 1998 the stadium was renovated and rebuilt according to a design by Michel Moga.
In 2001 the sports facility was renamed “Stade Jacques Chaban-Delmas” after the former mayor (1947–1995) of Bordeaux Jacques Chaban-Delmas . For the Rugby World Cup 2007 the arena got two large video walls with 37 m² and the floodlight system now provided 1609 lux . At almost 120 m, the players' tunnel from the cabins to the field is the longest in Europe.
The stadium often hosts a rugby top 14 semi-finals .
Since the stadium was not expand without the Art Deco style to destroy, was in the district Lac the Matmut Atlantique with 42,052 seats, u. a. for the European Football Championship 2016 . The rugby club Union Bordeaux Bègles was found as the new main tenant of the Stade Chaban-Delmas . After the club has been using the former Parc Lescure for top games since 2011 , it has been completely relocated since the 2015/16 season. The rugby club had a higher average attendance than the football club in the 2015/16 season - with 25,539 spectators the highest number of a club team in Europe.
