Darmstadtium (formerly: " Eka -Platinum") is an exclusively artificially produced chemical element with the element symbol Ds and the atomic number 110. It is one of the transactinoids ( 7th period , d-block ). The element belongs to the 10th  IUPAC group in the periodic table of the elements and thus to the nickel group .

history

Experimental setup for the production of elements 107 to 112

Darmstadtium was first produced on November 9, 1994 at the Society for Heavy Ion Research (GSI) in Darmstadt by Peter Armbruster and Gottfried Münzenberg under the direction of Sigurd Hofmann . The new element was artificially created by fusing a lead and a nickel ion. The core of the isotope 269 Ds was created by fusing 208 Pb with 62 Ni with the emission of a neutron :

14 different Darmstadtium isotopes with atomic masses between 267 and 282 have now been produced. The half-lives vary from 3.1 µs ( 267 Ds) to 1.1 min ( 282 Ds).

Only a few dozen atoms of the element had been produced by the end of 2011 .

The initially valid name of the element Ununnilium (symbol Uun) is derived from the Latin name of its ordinal number 110. On August 15, 2003, the name Darmstadtium was accepted by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry ( IUPAC ). In honor of the Darmstadt Society for Heavy Ion Research , which discovered and manufactured six new elements, Ununnilium was officially named Darmstadtium (Ds) on December 2, 2003 . Darmstadt is the only German city after which an element was named.

safety instructions

There is no classification according to the CLP regulation or other regulations because only a few atoms of this element can be produced at the same time and thus far too few for a chemical or physical hazard.
