Valašské Meziříčí [ ˈvalaʃskɛ: ˈmɛzɪr̝i: tʃi: ] (German Wallachian Meseritsch ) is a town in the Moravian Wallachia in the Vsetín district .
Surname
The place name Valašské Meziříčí goes back on the one hand to the Wallachians who immigrated between the 14th and 17th centuries into the region still known as Moravian Wallachia . The second part of the name means in Czech between the rivers .
geography
The city is located at the confluence of the Vsetínská Bečva and Rožnovská Bečva to the Bečva . It lies at the foot of the Hostein Mountains , Wsetin Mountains and the Moravian-Silesian Beskids .
history
Originally, Valašské Meziříčí consisted of two places: Krásno nad Bečvou and Meziříčí, on the right and left banks of the Rožnovská Bečva.
Meziříčí was first mentioned in a document in 1297, not quite 100 years later it was granted city rights. Until the middle of the 15th century Meziříčí belonged to the episcopal fiefdom of Arnoltovice and then became the seat of this rule. Meziříčí was still used without the addition of Valašské until the 18th century. In the meantime, however, Meziříčí nad Bečvou or Meziříčí pod Rožnovem was also used. In 1924 Krásno and Meziříčí merged.
In 1942 the 150 or so Jews from Valašské Meziříčí were deported via Theresienstadt to the Auschwitz and Treblinka concentration camps. To commemorate this, the community inaugurated a Holocaust memorial in 2004 .
After 1945 Valašské Meziříčí developed into a center of the chemical and glass industries. Internationally today only the chemical industry plays a role, which is represented by Gobelin. Schott Solar operated a 40 MW production line for solar modules here from 2009 to 2012 .
Between 1998 and 2001, the central collective cemetery for the soldiers who died in North Moravia in the Second World War, with 3100 grave sites, was built in the city cemetery. In addition, the city erected multilingual memorial plaques for the dead of other wars and nations.
