Volmerange-les-Mines (German Wollmeringen , Lorraine Wuelmeréngen ) is a French commune with 2189 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ), about 11 kilometers northwest of Thionville .
Volmerange-les-Mines is surrounded by extensive forest areas. In the first half of the 20th century, iron ore was also mined here, which gave the place its current name.
history
The place was first mentioned in 980 as Valembregam villam , then Wallmeringen (1305), Wolmering (1506). And has belonged to France since 1769. From 1869 to 1920 it was called Volmerange-lès-Œutrange , and has had its current name since October 1, 1920.
