The Écoles Centrales are a network of French engineering schools, which in turn are part of the grandes écoles . They are funded by the French Ministry of Education and Research ( Ministère de l'Éducation nationale, de l'Enseignement supérieur et de la Recherche ).

The association was founded in 1990 as a loose association of similar institutions in order to create an elite network for engineers.

The aim of the training is the generalist central engineer . The strong specialization that is common at universities is deliberately replaced by a broad education. The engineering subjects are not viewed as stand-alone, but are taught together with skills that are useful in everyday work. So include business administration , languages and project organization for curriculum and account for about 25% of the content from.

This comprehensive training is intended to prepare future engineers for tasks that require interdisciplinary and international thinking. In order to promote the international exchange of ideas, the écoles centrales offer, in addition to the widespread exchange programs, multi-year double degree programs with European universities.

The degree awarded by the Écoles centrales is the Ingénieur diplômé de l'École Centrale… .

The Écoles centrales are members of the TIME ( Top Industrial Managers for Europe ) -University Network.

There are currently five Écoles centrales in France:

The École Centrale de Pékin has existed in Beijing since 2005 and offers six-year training to become a qualified engineer in French. This school should also belong to the écoles centrales in the future .
