Career
Alexei Kowaljow was drafted in the first round of the 1991 NHL Entry Draft as number 15 by the New York Rangers . So he became the first Russian player to be drafted in the first round. Kovalyov was an integral part of the New York Rangers when they won the Stanley Cup in 1994 . Together with Sergei Nemtschinow , Alexander Karpovzew and Sergei Subow it was the first Stanley Cup victory with Russian participation. Kowaljow was particularly convincing with his stick technique.
In the 1998/99 season , he was swapped with Harry York for Petr Nedvěd , Sean Pronger and Chris Tamer to the Pittsburgh Penguins , after he had only played 14 games for the Rangers. It was the same in Pittsburgh , where he set his personal record. First he collected 75 and in the following season even 95 points for the Penguins . When Pittsburgh was forced to cut the team's pay structure, Kowaljow was transferred back to the New York Rangers along with Dan LaCouture , Janne Laukkanen and Mike Wilson for Mikael Samuelsson , Rico Fata , Joël Bouchard , Richard Lintner and some cash .
Only about a year later, the Rangers gave him up for Jozef Balej and a draft right to the Canadiens de Montréal . He spent the lockout season in the Russian league at Ak Bars Kazan , where he scored 23 points in 35 games. Kovalyov played for the Russian national team at the men's ice hockey world championship in Austria in 2005 , where he was voted the tournament's best striker. At the start of the 2005/06 season , Kovalev signed a four-year contract with the Montreal Canadiens , which brings him $ 4.5 million a year. On July 7, 2009, after becoming a free agent after the 2008-09 season , he signed a two-year contract with the Ottawa Senators .
On November 22, 2010, he scored a goal for the Senators against the Los Angeles Kings in his 1,249th NHL game and reached the mark of 1,000 points as the 76th player in the history of the NHL . In February 2011, Kovalyov was given in exchange for a performance-related seven-round vote in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
On July 29, 2011, Kovalyov agreed on a two-year contract with Atlant Mytishchi from the Continental Hockey League . In June 2012, this contract was terminated because Kowaljow wanted to try to get an NHL contract again. During the NHL lockout in 2012, he initially trained with the Swiss second division club HC Red Ice . After the lockout ended, he received a trial contract from the Florida Panthers in January 2013 , which was extended a few days later until the end of the season. In March 2013, the Russian initially ended his active career.
On June 10, 2013, the Swiss NLB club EHC Visp announced that Kowaljow had signed a one-year contract. He also plans to found an ice hockey school in the canton of Valais. After only one season, on July 2, 2014, he retired from top-class sport for health reasons.
On March 23, 2016, the EHC Visp announced the return of Kowaljow for the 2016/17 season, where he was hired as head of sport and board member. Only one season later he was dismissed from office as sports director.
