Bennwihr (German Bennweier ) is a French commune with 1,335 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Haut-Rhin department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Alsace ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Colmar-Ribeauvillé , the canton of Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines and is a member of the Pays de Ribeauvillé municipality .

Bennwihr is a municipality on the Alsace Wine Route . The best- known wine location is the Alsace Grand Cru Marckrain , which the place shares with the neighboring municipality of Sigolsheim .

geography

The municipality of Bennwihr is located at the foot of the Vosges , six kilometers south of Ribeauvillé and ten kilometers north of Colmar . The municipality is part of the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park .

The neighboring communities of Bennwihr are Mittelwihr and Beblenheim in the north, Ostheim in the northeast, Houssen in the southeast, Colmar in the south and Sigolsheim in the southwest.

history

From 1871 until the end of the First World War , Bennwihr belonged to the German Empire as part of the realm of Alsace-Lorraine and was assigned to the district of Rappoltsweiler in the district of Upper Alsace .
