Bock (family name)
Bock is a surname found mainly in German-speaking countries .
origin
The onomastics professor and lecturer Jürgen Udolph derives the name from houses named after animals. In the past it was customary to name houses with animals. These names then passed on to the residents.
So the name Bock developed from the Middle High German house name Boc , which was subsequently also given to stubborn people based on the animal.
The language change of the name is shown below. The years given are in each case in which the name was shown for the first time:
- 1209: Boc
- 1303: Bock
- 1332: hus with the bokke
- 1424: to the goat

In 2006 around 16,753 people in Germany had the surname Bock. This made him the 185th most common surname in the Federal Republic. It is particularly widespread in Baden-Württemberg , Saarland , northwest North Rhine-Westphalia and northern Hesse .
