Coordinates: 37 ° 51 ' S , 145 ° 2' O Stonnington City is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Victoria . Stonnington belongs to the metropolis Melbourne , the capital of Victoria. The area is 26 km² and has about 100,000 inhabitants.
Stonnington borders Melbourne city center at the northeast end, the northern border is formed by the Yarra River and Gardiners Creek. The City contains nine neighborhoods: South Yarra , Prahran , Windsor, Toorak , Armadale, Kooyong , Glen Iris, Malvern and Malvern East. The City Council is located in Malvern in the center of the LGA.
Stonnington is mostly residential and has many old buildings from the early Victorian settlement period in the second half of the 19th century. South Yarra is one of Melbourne's most exclusive residential areas. The city also has numerous gardens and parks.
In addition, the retail sector is strongly represented here with several well-known shopping streets, e.g. B. Toorak Village, Chapel Street.
The Kooyong Stadium , built in 1927, hosted the Australian Open until 1987 before moving to the larger Melbourne Park.
According to data from a 2016 census by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the proportion of residents who were not born in Australia is 39.2 percent, which is well above the Australian average. Most of the non-Australian born residents are from the People's Republic of China , England , India , New Zealand, and Greece . According to the census, no English is spoken in 26.7 percent of households. The most widely spoken languages in these households are Greek , Cantonese , Italian and Spanish . 46.5 percent of the population belong to Christian religious communities.

Stonnington City Council has nine members elected by residents of the three wards (three councilors per ward). These three districts (East, North and South) are determined independently of the districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
