history
Older documents show that a Mr. Elliot registered a piece of land in his name in 1818. He is believed to have been the first settler in what would later become Clay County.
Clay County was founded in 1824 from parts of Wayne County, Lawrence Counties and Fayette Counties and united the settlements of Larkinsburg, Blair, Bible Grove, Pixley, Hoosier, Louisville, Oskaloosa, Songer, Xenia, Harter, Stanford and Clay City. The county was named after Henry Clay (1777-1852) from Kentucky , a member of the House of Representatives , the Senate and Secretary of State of the United States.
The first administration was established in Maysville , Louisville became the seat of administration in 1842.
