Today's Archdiocese of Sens-Auxerre ( Latin Archidioecesis Senonensis-Antissiodorensis , French Archidiocèse de Sens-Auxerre ) of the Roman Catholic Church in France was founded at the end of the 3rd or beginning of the 4th century as a diocese in Agedincum , the capital of the Roman province Gallia Lugdunensis IV or Senonia, which - like other dioceses in provincial capitals - held a special position in the church hierarchy from the start.
Under Charlemagne , Sens was elevated to a metropolitan diocese and maintained its special place throughout the Middle Ages because the diocese of Paris was one of his suffragan dioceses . For this reason, the Archbishop of Sens presided over the councils in Paris and played Archbishop Philippe de Marigny a special role in the trial of the Knights Templar in Paris.
